Which uni for film production or directing?

I'm deciding between Salford and Liverpool LMA for film production/directing. Where would you go and why? Has anyone done these courses or could share what they’re like? 😊

Personally with researching each courses and universitys seperately, Salford definitely has the advantage of being located within media city which means any source of film/tv production work experience is going to be much more accessible and easily attainable with the righ connections, as well as this Salford's accommodation has been rated extremely good for the price ranges they offer.

On the flip side, it could be argued that Liverpool LMA is a much stronger options as it has better links within the industry due to alumni, and had better filming studios than salford. As well as this, Liverpool LMA is much more of a direct route into the directing/media industry.

Hey @Troylet ,

I'd definitely say the best way to work this out for you as an individual is to take a look at the modules and how we both teach the course, and see if one feels more interesting/a better fit to you as a learner. For us at Salford, we teach really practically and like to give you lots of optional module choices in your second and third years, meaning you can choose the areas within film that you're interested in and start to specialise into. Its worth considering facilities too - we're based both at our MediaCity campus and on our main campus for this one, with lots of our specialist studios and editing suites at MediaCity, and a big production warehouse space that we made after converting one of our buildings into a film set space. We're also working on some really fun projects in our Film Department, including working with a rare Magellan 65mm camera, used on films like Tenet!

If you haven't considered Open Days I'd also really recommend seeing if you can attend one - we've just finished our Open Days for this year, and will be having our next one in June 2026. If you have any queries about the course let me know - more than happy to advise, or answer any queries you have about Film/Salford!

All the best,
Becky
