General engineering UK university rankings

I know that Cambridge is ranked 1st in the UK for general engineering and Sheffield is ranked 3rd for the subject. Does anyone know which university is in 2nd rank?

Rankings and League Tables etc are essentially just marketing-fluff and mean nothing significant in the real world. They are certainly no way to choose a degree course. because they can never tell you if you will like that course, or enjoy being at that Uni. Go to a range of Uni Open Days, listen to the subject presentations, look around, ask questions , and then decide where is the right place for you.

No offense to Sheffield but it being 3rd really shows how accurate the rankings you're looking at are.

Why do rankings matter to you? The people that only care about those are not the ones that you need to impress.

Because I would like to have access to the cutting edge of engineering developments and the people involved in them.

You wont have 'access to them' as an Undergraduate - you won't even be taught by them.

No one does rankings based off of equipment or how cutting edge they are, either. Whatever floats your boat though

Hi Xake, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in general engineering.

The great thing about Sheffield is that you get practical, hands-on experience and you benefit from the state-of-the-art laboratories across the University, including everything The Diamond has to offer. The Diamond houses specialist engineering facilities.

My partner did his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and got to use the pilot plant in The Diamond, as well as the other specialist equipment.

Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to know about the University of Sheffield and I would be more than happy to help. Alternatively, you can talk to a current general engineering student directly here.

Hope this helps.

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😀

I assumed that rankings were based on the availability of specialisms and facilities. Even if uni rankings aren't a representation of this, I still need recommendations(from anyone) for universities which may fulfill my requirements.

Look for a uni with a placement year not where they figure in the fairy-tale of League tables - these aren't scientifically done and would fail a GCSE Stats piece of work.

Cambridge aren't 'cutting edge' by the way - do they have 3D printing now? Some unis had this 13 years ago and the last I heard they weren't using the latest version of software.
