Unis for law

Im gonna send my ucas off by the end of this week (Thursday) and this is my final uni line up. For reference, I'm not allowed to move too far and I live like an hour west of london so anywhere 2hrs and more is a no go (i.e leichester). My grades are AAA+ A in epq and i have NOT done the LNAT.
My unis are: QMUL (prob firm), Exeter, Southamton, Surrey (insur), and Sussex
I'm mostly in it for the qualification and likelihood of job after uni (london law firms n stuff) but I also consider uni life and experience etc etc
Is this a bad line up before I send off?

It’s not a bad line-up at all with AAA and an A in EPQ; you’re a strong applicant. QMUL, Exeter, and Southampton are well regarded for Law and have good links to London firms, and Surrey/Sussex are solid back-ups, given location and entry requirements.
Not having the LNAT rules out places like KCL/UCL, but for your goals, this list still makes sense. For London law firms, your grades, work experience, internships, and networking will matter far more than small differences between these universities.
If QMUL is your firm and Surrey your insurance, that’s a sensible strategy.

Hi @rgerfefrer,

I am a current Law student at Exeter so here is my insight 🙂

For Law at Exeter, the qualification is strong and well respected by employers, including London firms. Exeter Law School is part of a Russell Group university and has a solid reputation for producing graduates who go on to City training contracts, regional firms, the Bar, and postgraduate study. It’s not Oxbridge-style intense, but it’s academically rigorous and taken seriously by recruiters.

The course itself is well structured: first year gives you the core foundations (contract, public law, legal system, criminal law), and then in later years you get much more choice. There are plenty of commercial, international, and human-rights-focused modules, which is helpful if you’re aiming for London firms. Assessment is mostly essays and exams, so it really rewards strong written skills.

One big plus is careers support. The Law School works closely with the university’s careers service and runs law-specific events, employer talks, application workshops, and networking sessions. Firms do come onto campus, and lots of students also apply successfully to London schemes independently Exeter doesn’t limit that at all. Being outside London hasn’t been a barrier for people who are proactive.

In terms of student life, Exeter is very much a “proper uni experience” place. The campus is busy, social, and self-contained, with loads of societies, sports, and events, so you don’t feel like you’re missing out just because it’s not a huge city. Law students tend to be quite social as well it’s not a cut-throat environment, and people generally help each other out.

Given your grades, EPQ, and the fact you’re not doing the LNAT, Exeter makes a lot of sense in your choices. It’s a strong academic option with good employability outcomes, without being unrealistic or overly risky.

Hope this helps a little!

Hey! I'm a Marketing student here at the University of Southampton. Although I don't study Law, I've worked plenty of uni fair shifts, so I'm happy to give you the insider perspective!
You've got a fantastic university lineup, and checking everything before Thursday is super smart. With your brilliant grades (AAA + A in EPQ), you're definitely a strong applicant.
QMUL, Exeter, and Southampton are all prestigious Russell Group universities, a big plus that London law firms definitely notice. Speaking as a student here, it’s brilliant. It’s a proper big university with an amazing social scene and over 400 societies, which is perfect for a great university experience. You get a top-quality degree that opens doors, and the direct train journey to London is really quick and easy! Also, great news: Southampton doesn't require the LNAT, which keeps things simple for your application.
