What should I do?? (vent)

Hello!!
I'm currently in year 13 and thinking about doing a gap year to apply to medicine. I didn't apply in October because I figured I would get rejected almost immediately (I got predicted an ABB in year 12 and my ucat wasn't great). I spoke to my parents about doing a gap year and they were fine with it initially, but now my dad's adamant about applying to another course like neuroscience. It wouldn't have been a problem except my mocks did not go well and my predicted grades have gone lower (BBC). I've been trying to write a new personal statement on top of this and it sounds so horrible, there's absolutely no passion in it. I really don't want to do anything other than medicine.
I was just planning on somehow getting 3 A's by the time the exams start ( if anyone could give me tips I'd really appreciate it!!). So it's getting really overwhelming having to worry about ucas and my personal statement.

I'm also aware sometimes you can get incredibly lucky as some universities offer places through clearing but I don't think I should rely on that as a stable option?

From what my dad's saying, he's worried everyone he knows, both family and friends, are going to mock me once they find out I can't get into university let alone medicine the first time around. Literally everyone in my family have gotten into Russel group universities, or they're doing something that has really high entry requirements. I'm losing my motivation to continue though, with every reminder of how painfully mediocre I am it feels like everyone's just slowly giving up on me, like I'm nothing but a burden now. I'm aware medicine is going to be really stressful and my post is most likely making me sound like I cant cope with something as simple as studying. I'm currently at a bad point in life and I do acknowledge it. My grades can go up if I'm willing to do something about it ( if anyone's gone through similar please give me some advice on this).

I have made some sort of an idea of what I might do if I end up getting 3 A's by August :

Book UCAT for as late as possible and revise properly across the summer
Get medical work experience for at least a couple of days
Volunteer at food bank ( September to November)
Finetune my personal statement
Make sure to get at least one proper offer after an interview!!
Get a job/s (March- August ?)
If this sounds unreasonable please let me know so I can change it!!

Thank you for listening!! •̀ •́ ˵ )

Medicine clearing is not something you can rely on. It's a rare thing and I believe that for the most part it is open only to people that the unis have previously interviewed and rejected/placed on waitlist.

It sucks that your family is putting this pressure on you to go study something else over some imagined perceptions other people might have, but this is your life and so you should chase your dreams. If this is to pursue Medicine, then take a gap year and apply.

Obviously do work to ace your A-levels, since this is very important. It's been a while since I sat my A-levels but, generally speaking, I remember I was a serial study period waster, so if that's you, best to stop that and use your study periods productively (I know I probably would have done better in my A-levels if I had). Don't be afraid to ask for help in class and maybe try to study with your mates if you can. And practice, practice, practice!

UCAT - you don't want to leave it too late, as this is the single most important factor that will decide what unis you can apply to, and so you want to have some time to ponder over your options after you've sat it. So maybe early September at the latest. Little but consistent practice every day for a month or two before the exam is the trick which has worked for me (three times!), but many people will disagree with me. Loads of threads and guidance online, up to you to decide what approach works best for you. Definitely wouldn't worry about it until the end of year 12 though.

Yes, do get medical work experience if you can, and the earlier you start the better. In-person is best, but online works too these days - Medic Mentor used to run an online programme, they might still do, or there's also the Brighton and Sussex Medical School online programme. Work experience can be volunteering at a hospital or even an old people's homes too.

All of your other plans sound good and reasonable, but don't worry too much about them just yet. Your main priority right now should be acing your A-levels. Good luck!

Thank you for that then!! Neuroscience is honestly just my dad's back up plan for me just in case I don't get good grades in August. I might try for it thought if getting in with lower grades is an actual possibility

Thank you very much for all the advice!!
Clearing wasn't going to go well for me anyway I think. I think having to do an interview at that much of a short notice wouldn't go well for me.

I'll have to hope I can convince my dad to let it go for now because it just isn't possible for now. I'm just going to have to push through the invasive questions everyone's bound to ask.

My teachers have made it painfully clear that nothing's going to happen with the state I'm in.

I don't think they're going to be much help in the long run, which probably isn't very good for me. My school unfortunately has a habit about prioritising people they think are going to do really well 🫠.
I honestly just think I haven't exactly had the best year to prepare for medicine and university applications in general ( this isn't me trying to deflect from my own problems ). A lot of stuff happening leading to me just digging my grave atp.

I am going to try my utter best to achieve 3 As in the final exam!!

Navigating family is tricky business... I won't presume to know your family circumstances, but when talking with your dad you can't forget that you are an adult now and you should be the one to carve out your own path in life. Listen out to your parents, sure, ponder their words, absolutely, but act on them... that's a judgement call. They are older and therefore, wiser in some things than you, but it's your life, not theirs. Always keep that in mind if they want you to do things a certain way you disagree with.

It's very unfortunate to hear about your teachers, because that's not how they should behave, but still ask them for help. Showing initiative might jolt them into a change of attitude, and one thing's for sure: if you never even ask for help, then you won't get it. Also, loads of videos on youtube and things to help explain A-level content, and the Study Help forum here on The Student Room is also an excellent place to ask for help with your A-levels.

I'm sorry to hear that it's been a tricky year. Life does that to you sometimes, but you have to just pick yourself up, dust yourself off and believe in yourself that you can do this. Because you can do this if you put in the effort, which is certainly in your capability if you are still trying to forge your way ahead despite the barriers.

I wish you the best of luck with your A-levels, you got this!
