I've been told to repay my student loan?

I had to take an interruption of study and basically drop out of my year abroad after 2 months, i was extremely depressed and suicidal the whole time i was there.
when i came to the descion to take this interruption of study, i read around how this would affect my maintenance loan and everything i saw seemed to suggest that you can get maintenance loan for all years of your course plus one additional year.
but now ive just gotten a letter saying I need to pay back the ~3k maintenance loan i got this year, when i thought i would get to keep it. the problem is i already spent the whole loan (and more!!) on rent, flights, food, etc living abroad for two months so I do not have 3k to give them.

how is this fair?? like i needed that maintenance loan and everywhere i could see online made it seem like they wouldnt ask for it back if i took an interruption of study and now theyre asking for it back?? i dont know what to do

It is standard procedure that you have to return any maintenance loan for the period after you left/suspended the course:

Maintenance Loans
Your student finance provider will reassess your Maintenance Loan based on the number of days you attended your course.

If any of your loan covers the period after you’ve left your course, this counts as an overpayment and you’ll need to repay it straight away.

If you do not return to your studies, the Student Loans Company will write and tell you how much you must repay. If you cannot repay the full amount, you can ask them to set up a repayment plan.

The rest of your Maintenance Loan is repaid in the usual way once you start earning over the threshold amount.

However, if you plan to return to your studies, the amount can be taken off your student payments when you return. You might need to check with SLC that they have the correct suspension date for you and that they know you intend to return to study.

but i needed the whole loan the two months i was away. (and it wasnt even enough to afford enough food every day, i was hungry the whole time)
the months after that i was planning to cover with my job stipend but i never actually got paid.
like if i was studying at a uni abroad and left after two months i would have gotten ~9k and spent ~3k and basically only had to pay back money i didn't spend. which would be fair. my problem here is i used my whole loan already.

like i dont understand what slc wanted. would it have been better then if i didnt drop out, stayed in spain so i didnt have to lose maintenance funding i desperately needed and already spent, so i wouldnt be 3k down. and then possibly died while there because my situation was so dire, is that what i was meant to do????

i just dont get it

if they demand i pay back this ~3k maintenance loan it means i funded this year myself which is not supposed to happen!!!
