We’ve all done it – procrastinated our assignments until one or two weeks before they’re due, only to realise they’re all due around the same time. 😅
I have five upcoming assignments due between the 6th and 15th of January and I’ll be the first to admit I’ve barely started on them. Here’s how I plan to manage those deadlines over the next few weeks – all whilst enjoying my Christmas break!
Prioritise assignments both by size and date.
Some of my assignments are more involved than others; for example, one requires 1,000 words whilst another wants 4,000. My strategy is to always complete the shortest assignments first, as this gives me both a sense of accomplishment and a longer period of time to focus on the larger assignments (which are typically worth more). However, I do always try and keep deadlines in mind as well: if a short assignment is due last, I might let it sit for a while depending on how urgent the longer assignments are.
Work on one assignment at a time!
There are lots of students at university who are fantastic multi-taskers; I, unfortunately, am not one of them. If I try and work on two assignments at the same time, I tend to mix up my references and lose track of my overall point/argument. Instead, I focus on one assignment at a time: this way, I’m not juggling too many different ideas in my head. If you are a great multi-tasker, you might approach assignments differently – it all comes down to playing to your own strengths and weaknesses.
Set daily word averages.
I have approximately 9,000 words in total to write across all five of my assignments, which means I should roughly be aiming for 500 words a day (with some days off in-between). I’ve always found that setting a daily word average is a great way to hold yourself accountable for your work whilst still allowing for some occasional wiggle room in case anything crops up – for example, if I do 800 words one day, I can do 200 the next whilst still meeting my target.
Do you have any upcoming assignment deadlines over the break? How do you plan to work through them? 🙃
