advice for assignment & uni advice needed please

hellooo!

I really need some help - I only got 1% on my first assignment as I somehow submitted a blank file even though when I previewed it it was there & it was worth 50% so to pass my contract law module I need to get 80% on my second assignment due in january which is a time-limited problem question with 4 sections which need to be 500 words each - my lecturer said that because it’s time limited we aren’t expected to do lots of research but if we do we might score more highly I was just wondering if anyone can please give me advice on how to try and get an 80 I know it’s really hard in first year but I would really appreciate any help as it would mean I wouldn’t have to redo my first assignment

also if I don’t get the 80% I can redo the first assignment in March and if I pass that I can still continue on - does anyone have any advice if I have to do this as i’m a bit worried I’ll feel really nervous and write a load of rubbish which won’t let me pass but I think if should be ok! I’m also going to message my personal tutor to see if she had any advice and to ask if it’s normal to have to pay when you resist the assignment (which i don’t think i do if i pass the reassessment because i wouldn’t have to fo an extra year)

tbh I think this is also me trying to be less stressed abt this bc thsi happened late October and i’ve been stressing all about it and only my course teacher knows so i think i’m just looking for reassurance i haven’t ruined everything 🙏

if anyone has any advice please lmk & merry christmas 🎄

Hi @Anonymous

If your university has an academic development team then it might be worth checking what support they can offer to help you with preparing for your exam. They might be able to help with things like study skills, academic writing and referencing. Make sure you read the instructions for the exam carefully so you know how you are expected to answer and what you need to revise in advance of your exam. Answering the questions in detail is the best way to do well in your exam.

This is easier said than done, but try not to worry about potentially having to resit your exam as it is really normal for people to have to do and you likely will not be the only one. If you do have to resit the exam, then try to talk to your marker / lecturers about what you can do to improve your work. Usually you would be able to get a second attempt for an assignment / exam without paying, however double check with your university / course to check if this is the case for you.

Hope this helps and good luck for your exam!

For your time-limited assignment, focus on structure and clarity: use IRAC (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion) for each section. Make sure each paragraph addresses the question directly.

Speaking from experience, I had achieved an 82, and an 84 in common and public law, so being very frank,
getting 80%+ is very difficult in first year, you need not only a mistake-free answer, but also thorough analysis, clear structure, and evidence of additional research. Without extra research or depth, even a perfect answer will usually only get a low first (72–75%).
An 80 and above is given depending on the extent of additional research used well and applied in additiona to having a mistake-free and well-structured answer.

Try your best to get the 80.
And keep in mind, even if you don't, first year grades don't count for most institutions (check with your uni), however if you apply to global firms they will ask for a transcript of all grades including first year.

Lastly, did you discuss with admin and academic support to try get your initial grade overruled if you have evidence it wasn't your fault?
And even if you do have to resit, it's not the end of the world.

Hope this helped,
Ulaw,
Alfred.

Hi there! (:

Sorry to hear you had that happen with your first assignment, guessing really frustrating for you when you've put in the work of doing the assignment!🥲 - if you have any evidence, such as submission recipts (sometimes you get when the assignments go through plagerism detectors) - i would really reccomend chatting to your uni and seeing if anything could be done! - also if you have any evidence, such as a last editted date being before the due assignment on the file meant to submit, would see about if this could be looked into - guessing you might have already done this, but putting out here just incase!

sounds like your doing all the right stuff for your next assignment, attending all your lectures, engaging with the content, going to any type of group tutorials/discussions your uni are offering alongside any hours your lectueres have open for questions are the best thing to do so that your prepared - any questions reach out and anything your wanting clarification on dont be afraid to ask!! - lecturers are there to help and will be more than happy to chat some more if it helps (:

hope this helps ease the nerves a bit & you have a nice break off for christmas!☃️

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that this happened with your first assignment. It is very annoying, but try not to worry too much as it will be okay.

My best advice is to talk to your tutors as much as you can. Maybe as your personal tutor if they have time to have a meeting with you where you can talk through some things that you are thinking about in terms of the exam and what is worrying you as they should be able to help you with some things that you might be worried about to try and reassure you.

Also, talking to your tutors about how you are feeling and seeing if they can help you at all is a good idea too. They will know what you need to do, and if they can, I am sure they would help you out with some pointers.

Talk to your peers too as they may know some things to research or you can all just help each other in general. I am sure they would be grateful for it too!

In general, don't worry too much about the resit. You shouldnt have to pay for it as you usually get one chance to resit something before having to pay (but this does depend on your uni so maybe ask your personal tutor). If you do end up having to do this I am sure it would be fine and you will pass so don't worry.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hey,
I am sorry to hear this happened! Please know that you haven’t ruined everything. I remember when I got a grade back from a specific module that was much lower than I expected; I felt so disappointed and panicked about my future in the course. Technical glitches like a blank file submission are heartbreaking, but they don't define your ability as a student.
Here is my active advice to help you through this:

Contact the Right People: You are doing the right thing by messaging your personal tutor! Also, consider reaching out to your lecturer or your module leader. Sometimes, if you can prove the file was "last modified" before the deadline, they might be able to help with an appeal, though it depends on your uni's specific rules.

Master the IRAC Method: For Law problem questions, stick strictly to the Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion structure. In a time-limited exam, clear structure is what gets you into those higher grade brackets.

Trust Your Preparation: You’ve been stressing since October, which shows how much you care! Channel that energy into a solid revision plan for January. You are clearly capable, and one technical mistake does not take away from all the hard work you’ve put in.

You have time to turn this around, and you have already taken the first step by seeking advice. Merry Christmas to you too, and hope this helps!😊
