Extenuating circumstances

Can someone give examples of what classes as extenuating circumstances for resits, etc? Is mental health considered an extenuating circumstance?
If it is, what kind of proof would be good enough to prove that it actually is an issue for an applicant?

Hi Anonymous

I assume that the extenuating circumstances are for yourself and if they are, I’m really sorry about this. I hope you’re getting all the support that you need and that you feel better soon.

Have you reached out to the student support staff at your university? If not, do, they are really great at helping you through these situations. I would talk to your personal tutor as they should be able to advise you on the protocols that apply to extenuating circumstances.

Good luck and I wish you all the best

Each Uni will have specific policies about this and usually this is explained on the relevant website pages for your Uni.

Hi there!,

really sorry to hear you've been having a tough time ☹️ - if you reach out to your university, explain your circumstances and how these are affecting your learning they can then direct you to any support they have available, alongside how to submit a thing about extenuating circumstances!

generally the info they need will likely be very dependent on the circumstances and also the unis policy with what they consider to be circumstances that significantly affect learning- most unis will have these on their website - but even if your not direclty fitting these circumstances your best reaching out and explaining as likely it will be a pretty broad statement on what they consider, which doesnt exactly fit your exact situtation so really are best just having a chat!

I would also see about reaching out to your lecturers, you dont have to say your specific circumstances if you dont want to to them - totally up to you!, but if you just explain you've been having a tough time they may also be able to offer some more flexibility or extra support to help catchup on any content (:

hope this helps, best of luck💜

Hi there,

I am sorry that you must be having a tough time with something at uni.

I would say the best thing to do is to get in touch with the student support team at your uni and see if the can help you with this. They will have a good idea on what will class as extenuating circumstances and what won't so if you g to them and talk to them about your situation they should be able to help you.

Or, you can talk to the general help team at your uni and they can point you in the right direction of who you can speak to.

I hope this helps,

Lucy - SHU student ambassador.
