Most DHT and Dental Hygiene courses set minimum GCSE requirements, usually:

English & Maths at grade 4/C or above

Sometimes Science/Biology as well

If you meet these minimum requirements, then weaker grades in other GCSEs usually won’t disqualify you.

Yes, slightly but it’s not the whole picture

Courses are competitive, so applicants with:

Higher GCSE grades

Strong science background

may look stronger on paper

However, universities do not select based on GCSEs alone.

Admissions teams place much more weight on:

Access to HE Diploma, A-levels, or relevant Level 3 qualifications

Healthcare experience (dental nurse, care work, clinical setting)

Personal statement (motivation, insight into the profession)

Interview performance (communication, professionalism, understanding of DHT role)

If you perform well in these areas, weak GCSEs become far less important.

If you’re worried about weak GCSEs, you can:

Highlight recent academic success (Access course, Level 3 science)

Show hands-on dental or healthcare experience

Explain briefly (if appropriate) why GCSEs were weaker and how you’ve improved

Consider resitting Maths or English if you’re borderline

If you meet the GCSE entry requirements, weak grades do not stop you from getting into Dental Hygiene or DHT.

Strong Level 3 qualifications, experience, and interview performance can absolutely outweigh weaker GCSEs.
