What to put as 5th option?

These are my current options, any suggestions?:
Oxford (Worcester) - Maths and CS
Imperial - Maths and CS
Edinburgh - CS and Maths
St Andrews CS and Maths

I am considering these courses:
LSE - Maths with Data Science
LSE - Financial Mathematics and Statistics
UCL - Mathematics
UCL - Mathematics and Statistical Sciences
UCL - Computer Science and Mathematics
Warwick - Discrete Maths
Warwick - MORSE

So far I am leaning towards the UCL Maths courses because they have better offer rates compared to LSE (I think?), and it's not in the midlands. But I've heard Warwick is good for these stuff and LSE also seems nice. Not sure about applying for UCL CS and Maths because I would then have to do the TARA as well. Something to keep in mind is that my PS is tailored to Maths and CS but I also kept a few data/stats concepts incase I ended up in this situation.

Currently waiting on St Andrews and Imperial (doing TMUA in Jan), unconditional from Edinburgh (Scottish Highers 5As Achieved), and rejected pre-interview from Oxford (probably because I did bad in the MAT on the day). Looking for something that would be quite a bit better than Edinburgh so that the tuition costs could be justified, but with a solid offer rate as well.

UCL - Computer Science and Mathematics

AI is the future, so having a blend of CS and Maths would likely set you up for the future. Good luck

Tbh that’s kind of what I want to do but the offer rate is <10% which seems pretty risky. Both other UCL courses have better offer rates so I wasn’t really sure.

Every competitive choice is a risk.
You just have to weigh this up against 'if you don't apply, you certainly won't get an offer'.

Hi there!

You're clearly a strong student if you're aiming for that shortlist - I'm assuming you're predicted at least one or two A*s and are taking Maths?

As others have said, aiming for all competitive places for a very competitive and popular course is risky business, and so (although this is of course up to you) you could use your 5th choice as a potential insurance choice with lower entry requirements than your other choices. Just in case you get some shocking exams etc or end up for any reason not performing as well as you're expecting to.

Examples: Sheffield (AAA is you have both Maths and Comp Sci at A-Level), Southampton (AAA), Glasgow (AAA-AAB), York (AAA), or Exeter (AAA-AAB). All of these are high-performing for Computer Science but you'd have to do a bit of digging into the courses to see if you'd be interested in them or others.

Hopefully that helps a bit - best of luck whichever course you decide on as your 5th 🙂

I was considering that earlier but I already have an unconditional offer from Edinburgh (Scottish Student so achieved grades at Higher) so I don’t think I’ll need an insurance anymore.

Do what needs to be done and apply for the course with a better offer rate.

Hi there @namitv ,

Those are some incredible options, and well done on getting an unconditional offer from Edinburgh! 🎉

I, personally, think that if you are applying for CS and Maths for all of your already-decided courses, it seems like you clearly want to study that. And if you also seem to be drawn to UCL, I would probably suggest applying for CS and Maths at UCL, depsite the lower offer rate, knowing that you have Edinburgh to fall back on, should you not recieve an offer from anywhere else; it seems like you are in a position to make that risk, if that is what you really want.

That being said, I know it will be a difficult choice, and I hope you come to an easy conclusion having weighed up all your options! Best of luck,

Dear UO Bath Rep, I am facing the same problem in puting my remaining 3 uni CS choices.

I have applied Bath's CS and AI BSc which is certainly very competitive and in high demand. My predicted grades are 3A* and A (further math) and eligible to contextual offer, would like to know when the CS offer from your university will be sent.

I understand for CS&AI:-
A level Contextual offer
A*AA or A*A*B
A*AA or A*A*B in three A levels including A in Mathematics.

Many thanks.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting and its great to hear you're also thinking of Bath as one of your 5 UCAS choices. And congrats on those predicted grades, you've obviously put a lot of work in to getting them.

For the majority of our courses, the large majority of our decisions will go out after 14th January equal consideration deadline, due to the sheer volume of applications we receive. So you will most likely hear from us from then to around the end of March.

When I applied to Bath for Psychology (another of our competitive courses) I got my decision several months into the new year. But just remember that how long you end up waiting for a decision has absolutely nothing to do with how strong your application is because applications are NOT looked at in time-of-submission order.

Hopefully this helps answer your questions but if you have any more then please let us know on here or call us on 01225 383019 if they're more specific to you 🙂
