stuck on what uni to do engineering at

Hi, im split between a few unis for engineering, i would love to go to UEA as its close to home and would be decently easy to get into, however the rankings for engineering are pretty low and im worried that this will affect my future career. One of my other options is sheffield , its a much higher ranked uni but would be so much further away from home and that seems pretty scary tbh. im just stuck as i feel like UEA could potentially limit me in my future employablity, any ideas ?

Rankings are irrelevant but Sheffield certainly the stronger engineering university, very well respected, lots of world class research. Particularly strong in aeronautical industries.

Hiya

Moving out of home can definitely be daunting and it is very normal to get homesick as a university student. During my first semester, I struggled to get settled in at first and missed home and my home friends a lot. However, by the end of my first year, I didn't want to leave uni for the summer and now as I am in my final year looking back, I do not regret moving away from home at all.

You could try visiting an open day first and see if you like the city and university facilities. Sheffield does have a highly reputable engineering department and we even have a student led engineering society who hold a UK and European record for highest altitude reached by a liquid-fuelled rocket and as a student-designed and built rocket.

I would suggest looking around at a few universities and visiting open days if you can and speaking to current students and lecturers as this helps get other perspectives.

Hope this helps and do let me know if you have other questions about Sheffield

Hey there!

I think that these are quite valid concerns to have!

I would say try not to worry about university rankings too much, most employers are less concerned about where the university ranks, and are more interested in how well you did at university and what you studied or experience you have! There are lots of ways you can boost your employability outside of lectures as well, such as by doing a placement or getting work experience, making good connections and just trying hard! UEA offers both a year in industry, and a year abroad with engineering, these are definitely worth looking into, as they will help your job prospects!

Maybe have a think too about the route you may want to go down after graduation, and take a look at the modules that each university offers, having some experience studying certain topics can help with your employability. Alternatively, if you’re not sure, having a broad range of topics to study will be useful. UEA also has a good careers service, who can help you to build employability skills, as well as a high post-graduation employment rate!

Regarding moving away from home, this is a very normal thing to feel worried about! I moved 3 hours away from home which felt scary at first, but actually isn’t as bad as it feels, Sheffield is about this far from Norwich, and you can get a train home in 3.5 hours, so it would be possible to go home for weekends etc! I think being away from home can help build independence, but if you did want to stay close to home, staying in uni accommodation can build this too!

I wish you the best of luck with whatever university you choose!
