What happens if I fail one module?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask about what happens in second year if I fail one of my assignments. Suppose I pass all my other modules but fail just one what happens in that case? Will I still be able to progress to the third year, or is there something else that will happen?

I'm asking because I’m a bit worried I might not have done well on one assessment. If I do fail it, can I re-sit it in the summer, or would I have to retake it in the third year? Would I need to retake just that module or the whole year?

I’ve done a bit of research online but I’m not completely sure how it works, so I wanted to check here. Thanks in advance for any advice

It will depend on the policies of your university and possibly those of the department, as well as how badly you have failed - if you have indeed done so. The rules will be in your university handbook or degree regulations.

Hi there! (:

As others were mentioning, it will be the specific university policy for what happens if you do fail, generally you'll have resits available, had a few friends who had to take again in 3rd year to get their required credits and also know people who havent had to & passed based on compensation so could just move onto the next year - generally depends!, if you have a advisor at your uni for your studies best asking them as they will know the specifc policy that would apply to you😊

best asking your university and finding out the details, generally though id expect there to be a chance to retake or some other measure before needing to retake an entire year!

hope this helps a little, best of luck with your module💜

Hi @Matadd 👋

It depends on your university policy so you should enquire with them to check. Usually there will be resits available which can put you in a better position but you should check with the exams department to see what they offer and what will happen next 😊

Hello, that's a really valid question and you're definitely not alone in worrying about this. Speaking generally I believe there is always a second chance to pass the module. I believe you cannot progress to the next academic year. Whether you would be resitting all of your previous assignments is university dependent so i cant answer that confidently.

Hi there,
As the others have said it depends on the university's policy. In my uni, if you fail a must pass assignment, you are required to re-sit in summer or later next year, depending on the type of assignment and module. there is a fee for retake and a cap on the mark. However, some assignments are not must pass which means even if you fail that assignment you won't automatically fail the module, provided you get the pass mark in that module from other assignments of that same module. I would suggest you to contact your university directly as they would be able to provide you the most accurate information. Wish you all the best.
Best wishes

Hello,
i hope you are doing well,
Generally in order to progress on to the next semester or the next year of university you will need to pass all of your assignments, you will have 3 attempts - including your first attempt to pass, if you were to get below the 40% mark the first time round, then at the second and third attempt you will be capped at 40%.
If you were to get below the pass mark the third time round too, then you would not be able to progress onto the next year until you have passed, what happens in most cases is that you resit that year and will retake that specifc module.
i would suggest speaking to your course director or module leader if in any doubt as they can ease any worries and help you where needed.
