Uni of Edinburgh or Uni of Sheffield for biomedical sciences?

I've gotten offers as an international student from both universities and although edinburgh has a seemingly high ranking I've seen some reviews saying that they have some issues with marking and student welfare etc and sheffield seems to have a much more positive look in terms of student reviews. I think both are pretty good in research and I do want to have more opportunities in terms of research so I'm just asking for opinions on which is a better choice
Hi @yuine,

Firstly, huge congratulations on your offers, they are fantastic! 🎉

I completely understand the difficulty in deciding which university is best for you. Hopefully, I can help answer some of your questions, drawing on my experience at the University of Sheffield. For context, I am currently in my final year studying a BSc Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry.

Initially, what sold me on Sheffield was the accommodation village and the campus. When visiting Sheffield on an open day, I immediately fell in love with Endcliffe student village, as it had everything I wanted to experience and more. It offered a small village atmosphere, complete with a shop, bar, restaurant, study area, and even a pond. It really ticked all my boxes and was a massive influence on my original decision to choose Sheffield (aside from the course itself).

Now, after studying at the University of Sheffield for four years, I can say it has exceeded my original expectations. Biomedical science is a great degree area with numerous career prospects and learning directions. However, I have also had many personal developmental opportunities during my degree, including a year in industry placement, which I completed last year, opportunities to work within the Julia Garnham Centre (especially great if you are interested in genomics and patient care), which enabled me to gain highly recognisable skills in cytogenomics and further areas as well as many networking and career-building opportunities. The course itself is great in exposing students to a variety of topic areas, alongside multiple learning opportunities both in the lab and outside, which have truly helped shape my interests and career aspirations.

I have linked some key aspects that may be of interest:
BSc Biomedical Science
Julia Garnham Centre
SURE Scheme
Accommodation
Placements
Year Studying Abroad

These are just a few of my personal opinions and experiences during my degree. I am happy to answer any other specific questions you may have about Sheffield, the course, student life, or other related topics. There is no wrong choice when deciding, as each experience will be unique in its own way. Best of luck in whichever you choose! 😊
