You will be treated just like all other students - same Welcome Week / Freshers events, same social opportunities.

Hi there,

I didn't do a foundation year myself, but two people I know did so I thought I could answer this.

One of the people I lived with in first year halls was doing a foundation year and it was as if he wad in first year too! You have access to all of the same opportunities, societies, freshers fairs etc so it is basically like you are in first year in terms of social life and opportunities. It is just your studies which will be different as you are in foundation year rather than first year!

Of course I don't know exactly how it works at uni of Sheffield but from my experience it is just like you are a first year, especially you are living in halls as I doubt people would even know unless you told them as you will have a similar timetable etc to first years!

One of my friends who did a foundation year said she was so glad she did it in the end. I think t first she felt like it was a bit of a hassle but she said it was great, she made lots of friends and has had an extra year at uni with us!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi, @ALLMIGHT1,

Great question, I personally didn't do a foundation year, but I know many others who did. Many of whom are grateful they did and thoroughly enjoyed it. I find it reassuring to know that people enter university at different points in their lives. Some go straight from A-levels, some take a gap year, and some choose not to attend until later in life, meaning you never quite feel out of place in whichever stage you entered at. Foundation years are an excellent way to settle into university and give you that extra year in figuring out the best way to find what works for you in all aspects, including studying and socialising. There are many opportunities available for all new students, including the Freshers' Fair, 'giving it a go' sessions with societies, and many others. A foundation year can be a great opportunity to maintain friendships formed during that year, as well as develop new ones with other new students as you enter Year 1. It's also an excellent way to explore the city and its surrounding areas, and to make the most of being a student.

Best of luck! 😊

Hi I did a foundation and majority of the people I'm on degree with did as well as in the arts its super common. Its really hard to tell peoples ages at uni as so many people do gap years or multiple gap years, theres loads of mature students and a lot of people who come straight off of foundation so I wouldn't worry about feeling a year behind as being 18 isn't always the majority at degree. Personally, a foundation is a huge advantage as you're less nervous about starting out at uni and the subject matter won't be as hard to grasp either as you're used to that level already. You will also be familiar with how uni life works and getting round the campus. This can also be a good way to make friends as you can help people out and recommend where to go out for food/drink/night out which is a good way to make friends. Also, a lot of people from your foundation will carry on to degree with you so you'll already know people/have friends.

Hope this helps,

Hi @ALLMIGHT1

This is a great question. Personally I didn't do a foundation year, but I know many people who did, alongside many other people who entered university at later points in life. There is such a variety of people from many walks of life that have ended up at university, therefore it doesn't really cause an issue. There is definitely no need to be concerned about how others will perceive you as you will be seen as the same as everyone else, you are all now at a similar point in your journey as often people find it quite interesting of how everyone got there.

Additionally, doing a foundation year is excellent in gaining some essential knowledge before beginning the main degree and you will benefit from it. Many people do foundation years, so try not to worry about it.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

It really helps knowing now that there will be people coming into the course from many different points, makes me feel like i wont be the odd one out at all ! so the general consensus is treat it like a first year socially! thank you 🙂 and best of luck on your final year !

Hi @ALLMIGHT1👋

Hope you are well. You will be treated exactly the same as others do not worry! In a foundation year, there will only be a couple of people- maybe 20 people? I do not know about engineering so it may be a larger group but for psychology I do know that it is always around 20 people. When you go to first year or anything, there is no difference. People will not know you anyway and in first year there are lots of people so you will all be treated the same.

Thank you so much! Glad I could help. If you have any other questions about the city, accommodation, or just university in general, I'd be more than happy to try to answer them ☺️

Good Luck!
