Bar Student Diaries Part 5 - My Typical Week as a Postgraduate Student

Hi everyone, I’m Tarra and I recently completed my Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) and Masters of Law (LLM) with City St George’s. This is Part 5 of my series entitled Bar Student Diaries, whereby I post threads about my life as a Bar student. Today, I will be sharing what my typical week looked like as a Bar school student!

Classes
My week consisted of going to various 2-hour sessions a day, 3 days a week. Class hours and times vary from student to student. Personally, my classes were on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with 1-3 classes daily. My morning classes typically started around 10am, while my afternoon classes were anywhere from 12-2pm; 2-4pm or 4-6pm.

Studies
After classes, I would typically spend the rest of the day in the library prepping for the following week's classes.

I would also go to campus on days without classes to keep up with the workload. City St George’s has a number of study spots, but the spaces I often used were the Northampton Square Library, the Student Hub and its private one-room cubicles, and the Law Library in the Law School.

Extracurricular Activities
During the evenings or on days I did not have classes, I would focus on extracurricular and other law-related activities. This included attending talks organised by the Pupillage Advisory Service, networking with legal professionals, and going for my Inns of Court Qualifying Sessions. Since such events have fixed times, I would regularly work my study time around them. For example, if my Monday night would be occupied by a dinner with my Inn of Court, I would prep Tuesday's class ahead of time knowing that I might not have time on Monday. Being flexible is key!

Events and Social Life
Alongside studying and building my resume portfolio, I went for events organised by City St George’s clubs and societies once or twice a week. During my time at City St George's, I have gone to an escape room and celebrated Thanksgiving with the Postgraduate Society, as well as gone to a Karaoke Society social, just to name a few.

I would also spend an evening or two in a week going out with friends. We would have meals together, play badminton or go for a concert!

Housework and Groceries
Where my first half of the week was spent on classes, my second half involved catching up on chores including washing the clothes, getting groceries, and doing housework. Since I lived very close to uni, I liked walking to Old Street for my groceries at Aldi, Marks and Spencer, or Superdrug; or I would walk to Angel for Sainsbury’s. After going out most of the week, I tended to stay home on Sundays where I cooked all my meals, studied, and did the housework.

All in all, I tried to maintain a balanced lifestyle by focusing not only on studies but also keeping life vibrant by making time for friends, events, resume-related ventures, and part-time work!
