Should I choose a Russel group uni 45 minutes away or 4 hours away

Hey guys, I’ve finally received all of my offers and I just wanted some advice on whether I should choose queen Mary which is close to my home or choose Durham which is 4-5 hours away. I received offers from queen mary for the law course but an offer from Durham to study law with foundation. In terms of my background life, I live in a south Asian conservative household so those who are aware of our circumstances will realise it’s hard to gain freedom from our brown parents. As of this moment i am leaning towards Durham because I want a social life and some freedom however a lot of peers around me have told me to choose queens because financially I won’t struggle. Thank you so much for reading !!

The biggest question to consider is your financial situation. If you are able to get financial support from parents to move out, or get a large enough student loan and can make it work, then definitely consider moving out. If you are actively going to struggle financially to pay living costs (even with part time work alongside your degree) then probably stay home.

You can try and see if you can get a scholarship from Durham if your family income is below £42,875. It's worth a shot applying because its £3000 per year, a significant discount over your 4 years.

Hey! Firstly, huge congrats on your offers. 🥳 As I am currently studying at Durham (and have been for 4 years now!!) I feel that it offers an incredible opportunity for both academic growth and personal independence, providing a strong foundation in law within a highly prestigious and respected university known for its excellent teaching. As you said, living away from home allows you to develop confidence, independence, and life skills while enjoying a vibrant student community, rich college system, and active social life that makes it easy to form solid friendships. The city itself is beautiful, safe, and student-focused, creating a balanced environment where you can thrive academically while also enjoying freedom, personal growth, and a genuine university experience that extends far beyond academic work. As you have mentioned the financial barrier with going further away from home, I would say that it is definitely worth checking out our scholarships and financial support via this link Here as you could be eligible.

Good luck with your decision!
