Durham or St Andrews?!!

Hi, I have received offers to study Philosophy and Theology at both Durham and St Andrews (2026), and I am currently torn between choosing one. The philosophy dept is stronger at St A but theology is stronger at Durham. I ‘clicked’ with St Andrews when I visited but was not too sure about Durham. However I do like the collegiate system at Durham as I currently am at a boarding school with a similar system. I’m also unsure about the course structure of each university as I like both of them (the flexibility seems nice at St A but I also love my subject so I wouldn’t mind doing 3 years of it straight at Durham). Also, are there any major differences in workload at each of the universities?

For me personally the overall ‘prettiness’ and the libraries of each university are big factors! (albeit arbitrary) St A is terribly small and in the middle of nowhere so I don’t know about socialising however the city was beautiful. As a POC I am also wary of the alleged racism and classism at Durham especially at specific colleges and that is putting me off slightly.

Please let me know any thoughts.

You will finding racists or unfriendly people in many unis. The best is to find a community where you like and can thrive.

Andrews is a top uni but due to its location, i would suggest Durham. For colleges, i would suggest St Mary’s.

Finally, you don't have to choose yet. Apply to both and see where things are by April or May when you have to make your choices.

Hi, I’m at Durham doing Sociology and absolutely love it. I’m in St Cuthbert’s college and feel so at home there. I’ve found the support system 10/10 and the college principals etc really listen and want to help you.
I will say being from the north east that whilst no one’s ever been directly classist to me, there are definitely cliques, however you will find your people. So yeah I can’t comment on experiences as a POC but as a northerner I defo have felt a bit isolated, but finding good friends will help you with that. Noted you’ll find cliques, classism and racism at any uni, as the previous poster said.

Hi, I know im terribly late but i also applied for philosophy and theology this year with offers from durham and st andrews. for me, st andrews is ranking higher than durham rn! I stalked a lot of the dept on philpapers and imo the philosophy dept is great- one former st A professor gave a lecture w/ the royal institute of philosophy on idealism that I went to and I found it really fun. its making a vv good impression on me, and im certain ill firm it if i get rejected from oxford tomorrow xd

I also prefer the small-town nature of st andrews as its very quietism-esque lol. the theology dept at st andrews is also really great. although similar at durham, I feel like the social culture of durham just wouldnt be a good fit for me. im also a POC (arab), so i was worried about similar things w/ durham, but ultimately I expected to find some minorities of unfriendly people at any uni. it is ultimately up to you, but I definitely prefer st andrews for philosophy and theology- not just academically but also in terms of aesthetic (as i, like you, do value pretty libraries and buildings aha) and the general area!

i also like that the degree is 4 years vs durham's 3 years (UK) because that means I can spend longer in uni, which is a plus for me. haha!

best of luck
