Travelling home for Christmas

Well done for finishing semester 1 of university!!!

Now you can take some time to relax and catch up with family and friends. In order to make Christmas a bit easier for you, I have combined a list of my top tips for students:

1. Plan in advance your travel. It’s always busier over the Christmas period so make sure you plan your trip home in advance to make sure you can get the right train etc and arrive there on time so you don't miss it.

2. Don’t take loads of things home. You don’t need to pack up your whole room in halls to take home with you. Leave the things that you won’t use and only take home the necessities. This makes it easier for going home but also a lot easier for when you’re moving back to university in January.

3. Make sure you do some work. Having a rest over Christmas is really important but it is also likely that you will have some work due in not too long after you're back in January. Starting assignments over the Christmas period make it easier to adjust to being back at university when you start again, even if all the work you have done is some reading for an essay.

4. Take some time to adjust to being back at home. You will have got used to living away from home by Christmas so it may take some time to adjust to being back home. Some things that can help are discussing expectations with your family, getting a job, and meeting up with your friends from home.

5. Relax and have fun! Christmas is a good time to relax and take a bit of a break from your studies as well as catch up with your friends and family. Take advantage of the time that you have with them.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas, see you in the New Year!

This is such a lovely post! It's so important to remember that travelling back and the Christmas period itself can be quite stressful.

As Lottie mentioned, take time for yourself and give yourself time to debrief after a long semester at university. And remember that the Christmas break is there to give your mind and body time to rest, so do what's right for you!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hi everybody,

Thankyou both for your kind words - however this is just a note to acknowledge those of you who are staying at uni over the Christmas break for a variety of reasons.

Whether you do or do not celebrate Christmas as a holiday, please still take this break as a chance to take some time for yourself, to be with your friends and to do things together. Check out what events the SU are putting on for students staying on campus over the break - here at Bath we do all sorts of Christmas craft sessions, film nights, Christmas meals, a Christmas market, a carol service - its always worth getting involved with something to spend time with others.

Huge, huge congrats on completing this semester of uni regardless of what year you are in - uni is an adventure but by no means an easy ride and so you should all be very proud of how far you've come in only a few months.

Best wishes and happy holidays!

Hey @LHU Lottie,

Tons of great advice here! 🙃

I've definitely made the mistake of taking too many things home with me, especially clothes. I often forget I still have some of my wardrobe at home and mistakenly approach packing to go home the same way I'd approach packing to go on holiday.

I have a couple of upcoming assignments - so although I'm looking forward to relaxing these next few days, I know I have to get back to studying soon!

Best wishes and have a good New Year,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
