Do you like Aeneas?

Hello, everyone,

I recently lost a debate (which, ironically, I organised) about Aeneas. Personally, I find his character as flat as a piece of paper. However, I would like to see what other classics students think. Why do you like him? Or why not?

Thanks!
No not particularly. He effectively got his wife killed by making her walk behind him through a war zone, and his lack of mercy at the end of the poem despite his opponent's supplication was brutal.

When I first posted here, I would definitely have agreed with you. Now I’m starting to like him (much to my dismay). Just to play devil’s advocate…

What could he have done but lead Creusa through Troy? Otherwise she would have died. I still think he was an idiot for not even checking she was keeping up.

Also, I think killing Turnus was necessary. Otherwise, he would have had to explain to Evander why he didn’t. I think Feeney called an explosion of the repressed feeling of futility due to being unable to avert war felt by the reader in the run up to it. I still like Turnus though.

Why couldn't we have had a "Turniad" instead?

He takes his son's hand, puts his dad on his back, but makes his wife walk behind him?

What's wrong with his other hand? Or making her walk in front so he can see she's safe?

No, I agree about that. He screwed up big time.
