Hi all! I thought I would make a PhD Sociology for the University of Cambridge thread for applicants interested in matriculating for 2026/27 academic year entry.

I suppose I’ll start!

College 1st Choice: Wolfson College
College 2nd Choice: Peterhouse College
Applied for funding? Yes! And praying! 🙏

No, nothing yet. I think it will come sometime in the next two weeks. Btw, I remembered seeing you on the chat for MPhil applicants last cycle, did you end up going to Cambridge?

Cambridge Sociology PhD applicant as well.

College choices: Girton and Homerton College
Applied to Gates Cambridge

Status is still "Under review by department - Your application is currently under review" for six weeks now...

I got interviewed last week, I am now also waiting to hear back. Currently on DP as well. I think it depends on the availability of your supervisor as well, since it's a relatively busy time for them and the admission team.

mine is still under review its almost 8 weeks now - don't know what's happening - i mailed my proposed supervisor he said - my application is under consideration by dept and I will hear from them soon

ahh, well at least you got a response. my potential supervisor was kinda cut-throat with me and super negative. i think i'll be the first mphil student to not get an offer for the phd programme looool.

ohh 🙂 - don't worry lets hope for the best - you may get the offer - fingers crossed - and yes this time is really a busy schedule for all - the wait is more if you are a candidate based on funding and schoalrships

so, i kinda did in term 1 before i submitted my application to her (supervisor) know my plan, but i had to reschedule the meeting two times due to unexpected health reasons which have kinda took a huge toll on me.... so im scared shes gonna see this as a huge negative and that im bad at planning - when in reality, i' m not.

also, as part of the mphil in sociology @ camb, you can nominate two profs who are not your current supervisor (so i nominated her) to assess one of our practice/formative essays. she HATED it. and i mean DETESTED. there was no positive at all.

so yeah, feel like i've shot myself in the foot.

also, the funding seems extremely scarce this year at cambridge (e.g.,. AHRC announced regionally only ONE award for a student at Cambridge across ALL departments eligible) and ESRC is extremely minimal this year in their funding opportunities, so i am considering doing a phd in mainland europe as then it's treated like a job.

I think you'll be fine. I think the grading of your practice essays is also anonymous, meaning that I don't think they know they are grading you specifically. Do you know that she is your actual grader, since you said you listed 2?

no! i believe DP indicates a recommendation has been made by the degree committee, and the application is sitting with postgrad admissions office. also, i think whether or not one is interviewed, and the purposes of such interview, is contingent on the potential supervisor they named in the application - personally i was emailed kind of last min and my supervisor just wanted to meet me
