Regarding LSBU rejection to diagnostic radiography

I got an update from my ucas application that lsbu will not go further with my application because my personal statement was not 'adequate/satisfactory' to support my application. I am now going through a spiral now thinking that other uni's won't accept me because of this and I am wondering what I did wrong because I was confident that it was strong statement. Has anyone else got the same message from other uni's and wrote a good statement? I don't even know how my statement doesn't support my application?

Was your PS solely targeted at radiography?

Yeah it was, when writing my statement I was following ucas’s guidelines to help me write a statement for that course. I also got my careers adviser from school to check it and she said it was overall pretty good and said to make some changes before I submit it.

Curious. Is it a massively oversubscribed course?

Yeah my course is really competitive, could that be why?

I got this exact reason, but i'm so confused as well because my statement was solely radiography and taking about shadowing radiographers. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Oh that’s really weird because I was planning to do shadowing/work experience to strengthen my statement but it was hard to get a spot. I also asked chatgpt because the response was so vague and chat was explaining that they are known to be strict about direct clinical exposure and reflective patient care evidence (basically because I didn’t do work experience/shadowing). However, I looked on google and that saw that after covid many uni’s don’t have experience/shadowing as a requirement anymore. So it didn’t really make sense to me. (sorry for the whole paragraph, i’m just stressing about this lol).

I emailed admissions to see if they could give feedback, but yet to hear from them. The whole thing is pretty disheartening and stressful tbh, just praying the remainder unis accept my PS.

I understand how your feeling, don’t let this get the best of us. Hopefully you get accepted by the uni’s you want. Good luck!
I would try not to worry about what it means for your other applications. It may just be that you didn’t hit all of their specific scoring criteria. It could be a good statement, but if they are oversubscribed they may just be very particular and each uni may view the same statement differently.

Given that another applicant is equally puzzled after being rejected for the same cause, it seems likely that LSBU are using that as a catch-all reason.

Working in admissions, “course is very competitive” genuinely is just a catch-all for “wasn’t quite a strong enough applicant” where we don’t give out specific feedback.

I got rejected too for the same reason after thinking my ps was good, maybe they just had too many applicants?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. But it’s fine, hopefully you get picked by your first choice!

Hi there, we are really sorry to hear how upsetting this has felt for you that reaction is completely natural when you’ve put time and effort into something that matters to you. First, it’s important to understand what LSBU means when it says an application will not be taken further because your personal statement wasn’t adequate or satisfactory.

At LSBU we look at personal statements as a chance for you to clearly explain: why you want to study the course you’ve applied for, what you’ve done to prepare for it, and how your own experiences and skills align with the programme. We want to see that you’ve spent time planning your statement, that it reflects your genuine motivations and aspirations, and that it’s written clearly and cohesively so we can see how your interests relate to the course you’re applying for. Admissions teams use this part of your UCAS application to assess how well an applicant’s motivations and experiences support their chosen subject.

Because LSBU receive many applications for each course, the personal statement really matters, not just in showing that you want to study the subject, but that you’ve thought about how your skills, experiences and future goals connect with it. If a statement is vague, generic, focuses too much on unrelated topics, lacks reflection on relevant experiences, or doesn’t clearly demonstrate your preparation for the course, it can feel less supportive of your application compared with others. This doesn’t mean you personally aren’t capable or that you can’t write a strong statement. Sometimes it just means that what was submitted didn’t give the admissions team enough clear insight into your suitability for that specific programme.

Finally, receiving this message from one university doesn’t automatically mean other universities will respond the same way each institution has its own admissions process and priorities, and many see value in different elements of a personal statement. It also doesn’t define your future prospects. You can learn from this experience, strengthen your statement, and reapply with a clearer, more targeted narrative about your motivations and suitability for the course you want to study.

You are always welcome to explore LSBU and get a real feel for what student life is like here. We have a Southwark open day: Saturday 7th February 2026 where you can hear more about our courses and support. If you would prefer to see the campus in person you can book a tour https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days on a day that suits you and get a sense of the spaces you would be studying in. You can also chat to our current students https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat to hear honest experiences and get answers to any course questions you might have.
