Movies to watch this holiday break!

Hey guys it’s Meg from University of Staffordshire, just wanted to share what I’ll be watching during my time off this winter and hear some recommendations from all of you!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Ok I know there’s A LOT of debate about whether this film is a Christmas or Halloween movie but honestly? Why can’t it be both? The Christmas scenes in this are just so magical and winter itself always makes me want to watch something a little bit spooky to feel cosier! Also, the songs are absolute bangers and just because it’s full of monsters doesn’t mean we don’t learn a heartfelt lesson about being yourself!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

I fear this is self-explanatory. Another movie with amazing songs and some great visuals. As someone that’s usually quite moody during the winter I too relate to the Grinch and his nefarious scheming ways. Also, the jokes are so good, I think this film holds up really well. When I was a kid I wanted to be Martha-May so bad I have no idea why.

Red One (2024)

This might be controversial, but I will be re-watching this film in the coming days because it’s FUNNY! I think it’s a good break from the more traditional film and turns a lot of those cliché tropes around. If you want something with action and makes Santa incredibly cool, then this is the way to go.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997)

This is a spin-off straight to DVD film from the Disney Beauty and the Beast universe, I adored this when I was a kid so I’m probably wearing my nostalgia glasses when I say this, but I do love it. The villain is straight TERRIFYING, but it keeps all the winter wholesomeness that you wish was longer in the original film. I definitely recommend this if you’re a fan of the original and haven’t seen it before.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Do not come for me this IS a Christmas movie. The magical wintery aesthetic and themes of love and friendship are just so heart warming! I would say Edward Scissorhands is reminiscent of fairy tales and has a lot of that festive magic normally seen in traditional Holiday films. While it is a dark fantasy that doesn’t take away from its strong message of acceptance, definitely an uplifting and whimsical choice.

Those are on my list but I’m curious to know what everyone else will be watching!

Let me know-

Meg
Bad Santa and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation are films I recommend. Both are funny, one is cynical and nasty and the other one pure slapstick. Exactly what I like in my Christmas break.

We'll be having our annual viewing of Nativity! this evening! :woo:
For everyone who likes good old black and white films: It's a Wonderful Life is a must-do!
Can Die Hard be counted, as this film is regularly aired in Christmas period? I do.
