Single parents

Hi 👋

I have been offered a place for 2026 which I'm so excited about but I am having a little wobble. I am a single parent and worrying about finances, can any single parents advise how you are coping and is it a struggle?

I have studied before so I know I am only entitled to some student finance.

I am also worrying about placements too as it's a nursing course, can anyone please provide some advice

Thank you 😊

Hi im not a single parent but i do know you can get an extra amount from student finance as a parent aswell as your maintenance loan. And then the Learning support fund of 5000 plus an extra amount for parental support from them too. Apparantley the Nmc is looking to reduce placement hours for sept 2026 if that happens it will be easier, at the moment placement weeks are full time 37.5 hours and its 2 or 3 placements a year i think it works out 20 weeks a year but that might change by the time you start if you start in september.

Hi! Congratulations on your offer, that's so exciting! It's completely normal to feel nervous about finances and placements. Manage by carefully planning budgets, applying for additional support like child care grants, and connecting with university students. You are entitled to the NHS LSF bursary which is £1.5k and additional can be added for parental support. Apply within 6 months are started course to receive it.
