Foundation engineering question

Hi,
i applied for a mechanical engineering degree with a foundation year at sheffield , however im now considering electronic engineering rather than mechanical.

am i able to continue onto electronic after the original foundation year ive applied to? as the modules are the same i believe.

Should i contact admissions at sheffield? i just dont know if im bound to mechanical, as at many unis youre able to pick after one broad foundation year.

Thank you.

Contact Shefield. They are the only guys who are able to answer. Good luck.

Hi @ALLMIGHT1

It's great to hear that you are applying for Engineering here at University of Sheffield- it really is a fantastic course and my friends that have completed engineering degrees here have really enjoyed the course.

We have a team that deals with enquiries from prospective students here at University of Sheffield, who will be provide some clarity on this for you. You can get in touch with them online via chat, telephone or enquiry form (you can find all of these details here).😊 Hope this helps!

Usually foundation years are common to several degrees, and students may start the foundation year intending to do one course but end up doing another, but as above I'd suggest contacting Sheffield to confirm.

However, when you apply for student finance you will be applying for "X Engineering with Foundation" as your course normally - you want to apply to the "X Engineering" course you intend to complete for your SFE (e.g. "Electronic Engineering with Foundation") as otherwise they will count you starting on e.g. "Mechanical Engineering with Foundation" then continuing to the electronic engineering course a course change and you'll lose your "gift year" of SFE funding (even though the courses may be identical to that point!).

If you get an offer and start the course you'd also need to register/enrol into the same course for SFE. So it may be pragmatic to see if Sheffield can change your offer to reflect the new course anyway just to make sure everything lines up and avoiding any potential confusion.
