Predicted Grades for Law at Uni

Hi everyone,

I’m a Year 13 student about to submit my UCAS application to study Law (LLB), once the Christmas holidays are over, and I’d really appreciate some advice on my chances and how contextual offers work and might apply in my situation. I am the first in my family to apply, and an only child, so this has been quite a daunting process!

Predicted A Level grades:
English Literature & Language (A)
Law (B)
Maths (D)

I’m aware Maths is my weakest subject. At my school, predicted grades are finalised at the end of Year 12. However in my Year 13 tests so far I have consistently achieved a B and my school reference will explain that I am currently working at this level - it is policy that they cannot change the predicted grades at my school.

Universities I’m applying to:
University of Nottingham
University of Birmingham
Cardiff University
Aston University, Birmingham
Oxford Brookes University

Contextual background:
My postcode qualifies for Polar 4 Quartile 1
Household income below £30,000
First-generation university applicant
State school
Experienced significant anxiety and family circumstances during GCSEs and early sixth form, which affected performance
Only received formal exam access arrangements at the beginning of Year 13 (extra time)

Application additions for Law:
EPQ focused on miscarriages of justice in the UK legal system
Legal work experience at a top City law firm - Stephenson Harwood International Arbitration team
Strong personal statement

I believe I qualify for contextual consideration at several of these universities based on their published criteria, but I’m unsure:
How heavily contextual flags are actually weighted in practice
Whether my overall profile is realistic for these choices
How much the Maths prediction might hold me back, given the rest of my application

My questions are:
1. How likely am I to receive offers from these universities given my grades and context?
2. Which of these choices seem realistic vs aspirational?
3. Do contextual offers offset borderline grades for Law at these universities?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! As I mentioned I am the first in my family to apply so I want to get it right before I send it off!

Many thanks in advance!

Hello 👋
I hope you are well.
It is great to hear you are interested in studying at Oxford Brookes University!🎉

We do offer contextual offer for applicants who meet a specific criteria, you can find out more about this on our webpage.

For our LLB Law course ⚖️, the contextual entry requirement is a minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff Points.
We also offer a LLB Law with Foundation Year course. This is a 4-year course (where the first year will be the foundation year) and the entry requirements for this is minimum 48 UCAS Tariff Points.

If you would like to be considered for a contextual admission, there’s no separate application form, so apply in the usual way through UCAS and if you meet any of the criteria we’ll consider you for a contextual offer.

I hope this information helps! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the admissions team by email: [email protected] or telephone: 01865 535000

We look forward to hopefully seeing you on campus in the future!📚️

That D grade is a worry, and will probably mean you don't get an offer from your first three choices,
