Restart from year 1 at a better uni or continue

Hi,

I'm currently studying at Goldsmith's University for Computer Science and am in my second year. However, since starting, I've become very aware of the limited prospects from this university. I've applied for transfer to Newcastle University, where they said yes; however, I would restart from year 1, meaning I'd graduate in 2029 vs 2027. Is this worth doing? I'd be planning to do a master's after anyway but I would want to be in a top institution abroad.

Have you looked at the course structure at Newcastle vs Goldsmiths?

Are you currently unhappy at Goldsmiths/do you think that you’d be happier at Newcastle?

What field are you aiming to get into after graduation?

I’d personally say that the transfer isn’t worth it if you’re solely focused on going to Newcastle based on prestige alone and no other factors for such course. But that depends on your goals and it’s mainly you that sees what’s best for you.

In terms of abroad I’d personally say that a London university is gonna be more recognisable to employers/people abroad than Newcastle. Your average foreigner (unfortunately down to ignorance and it’s also the UK fault for making everything in this country about London and its surroundings) probably doesn’t know a whole lot if anything at all about Newcastle compared to London.

Id stay where you are.
Especially if you are currently happy at goldsmiths. And if you are doing a masters after anyway.
Are you wanting to go to Newcastle just for the prestige? (or is there any other reasons).

Hi,
Changing to a different Uni can be a stressful process so I recommend checking a couple things before you decide to make the big move.

-How do the modules differ and align with your interests in your chosen Universities?
-How are the student ratings? Prestige and Russell Group can only inform you on research-leading, rather than teaching. Unless you are doing a masters or PhD, this may not be as relevant to you. Many students graduate from non-Russell group Universities and land roles in major companies. At Staffs we have had students get into companies such as Google, AWS, Options IT, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, IKEA, Kainos, Codeweavers and many more. What matters at the end of the day is your employability at the end of that course; did you add to your portfolio, work on any projects, build a CV, do an internship/placement?
-Are you happy with graduating later? If your goal straight after is masters, then no stress, otherwise consider the current job market and trends.
-Why do you want to move? Is the course not to your liking, what do you want to get out of it instead?

Think about what will benefit you the most and whether you want that additional year to focus on yourself, new projects and certifications. Could be a great opportunity, but only if you are happy with it!

Kind regards,
Uni of Staffs, Comp Sci, Aura.

Bigger issue is that if you're currently in second year, you won't have full SFE funding for the new course at Newcastle - you'd need to self fund the first year at least there, unless you can apply for an additional year of funding under compelling personal reasons (wanting to go to a "better ranked" university is not a compelling personal reason).

I think this is realistically a moot point as I doubt the £9k+ tuition fee for the first year at the new course is worth it. You may as well just finish out the course where you are and do a masters using that money to cover the tuition fees.
