Hiya, without writing an essay; i’ve been estranged from both of my parents since late May 2025, there will definitely not be any likelihood of reconciliation. I live with my grandmother, who also is no contact with them. I’m applying to SFE in a few months but worried about whether or not I’d be considered an estranged student as it might be less than 12 months when I apply to SFE?
I’ve searched online but still wanted to make sure as it says ‘12 months prior to starting your course’ does that mean when I apply for SFE or in September just before the course begins? Many thanks

Hi there, is it September 2026 you're starting your course?

We do consider all cases on an individual basis, even if the 12-month period has not been met. You would just apply indicating the estrangement and either complete the estrangement form (making sure it's co signed by someone confirming your estrangement), or a letter from a good standing person of the community can be accepted in place of the estrangement form

A letter can also be accepted in place of the form, further guidance on this can be found below.
The third party needs to be ‘an independent person of good standing in the community’ who knows the details of their estrangement. This could be:

a university/college lecturer

a teacher

a support worker

a social worker

a doctor

a solicitor

a welfare advisor

the HEP named contact for estranged students

This person can’t:

live at the same address

be related to the student by birth/marriage or in a civil partnership

be their partner

If it is for September 2026 then the relevant forms will be available in the spring of next year to apply on.

Thanks, Jason
