Retake GCSE English to help uni applications?

I am unsure if it's worth retaking GCSE English to make my overall GCSE results stronger? I received a 5 (got it remarked and was 1 mark from a 6).
My grades are 99999888775 (5 in English language). I want to apply to imperial, Durham , Warwick and Bath at least to study maths with computer science. All the 9's were stem subjects. My results were lower than predicted and I plan to insert extenuating circumstances on the UCAS form.
I haven't decided yet if it's worth trying for Oxford.

The deadline for registering to sit the exams is getting closer and I need to decide.
All those mentioned above have a current (could change) GCSE language requirement for a 4.
I had to leave LSE out of my selection as they required a minimum 6.
I have to sit some entrance tests for some of these.
My question is, is it worth re sitting English language with the aim of getting a minimum 7 so the overall GCSE looks stronger or concentrate on getting A* predictions for my GCSE ? Also concentrate on gaining high on entrance test? Appreciate advice. Studying 4 A levels -maths, further maths, physics and computer science.

Also what happens if you register to resit but don't turn up? I.e if I change my mind.

Its only worth doing if the specific degree courses you want to do actually want a higher English grade.

Look at the courses pages on each Uni website and check. As one example, Bristol - BSc Mathematics and Computer Science | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol - only requires grade 4 and a higher grade isnt going to 'extra impress'.
