The Student Room Group

Brums, Mannie or Leeds

For universities, I have researched the course and don’t have any major preferences, I’ve applied to all, I’m just wondering which is the safest/best nightlife/housing etc.

Only you can decide on these options that suit your needs.
I would consider watching some YouTube on Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds from a student's perspective.
Reach out to your friends network to see if they know anyone studying in these cities, and ask if you can put some questions to them about the nightlife, or student housing.

From experience, Birmingham's student housing is generally in Selly Oak, which is relatively safe.
Nightlife is within the city centre, typically around Brindleyplace / Five Ways, although the clubs in Digbeth can be a bit questionable depending on time of year.

Manchester: most student housing is in Fallowfield, near the famous 'Curry Mile' road.
As for staying there, I have no advice to provide.
Nightlife is much better than Birmingham, but crime and trouble makers are also on the rise, combined with illegal substances.
Again, one to do your own research. Plan a day trip to Manchester but don't plan activities. Just walk around the uni area, city centre, fake being a student for the day to get a feel / vibe for the area you might potentially study in.

Leeds: Nightlife is good, and from experience, I felt safe in the city centre. It's not too far from Sheffield, or York, plus you can get coaches over to Manchester easy enough.
Social housing; again, no advice on that.

In summary:
No, I didn't study in any of these cities.
Yes, I have visited them all and experienced nightlife in all 3, when I was a student at a different university.
Did I feel safe? Leeds, yes. Birmingham at times. Manchester, depends on the areas you go.
Do I still experience nightlife now? I go Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, rarely to Birmingham and Leeds. - I mostly go to London.

Forewarning: Nightlife has changed. Most events now operate during an afternoon / early evening and finish around 22:00. Much prefer that to staying up all night and struggling at uni lectures.

Whatever you decide, only you can make the right choice. Enjoy University!
