Could Somebody Please Help Me Understand University Degrees?

Hi all, I was hoping that perhaps somebody on here could clear some things up for me, since my college left me in the dark largely about this kind of thing.

For September 2026 I've accepted an offer to study English & Creative Writing (BA Hons) after taking a gap year. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life even after said gap year, so decided to do something related to my strengths/interests (writing).

However, recently I've become interested in pursuing some kind of career within Law, since my uncle is a judge and I feel that I may thrive? Though, I've already accepted the English degree.

Would it be possible to do some kind of Law degree alongside this, Joint Honors maybe? Is that even possible after accepting my course? Could I possibly do a Masters degree in Law after completing the English degree? They are kind of related? Or would I have to swap courses after my first year?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Good afternoon,

The best option is to contact your university admissions staff. They will be able to advise you on your options with them and may be able to offer you a new course in law or discuss how to change courses.

Another option is clearing, where you can reject your current course and apply to new courses in July/August. UCAS has a great webpage on "What is Clearing? " to help you understand clearing, in case this is something you choose to do. It's a great alternative to gaining a space at university, and it won't change your university experience at all.

All the best,
Ella

you can do a law conversion year after your undergrad degree and then qualify to become a lawyer 🙂

You can go into law with any degree. 50% of solicitors and I think a similar proportion of barristers did a non-law degree initially

For becoming a solicitor you don't technically need to do any conversion course anymore, you just need to take the SQE and pass both parts. However doing that without formally studying law may make it unlikely to pass and I hear it's very expensive so I believe most subject changers end up doing either a graduate diploma in law (GDL) conversion course, or at least an SQE prep course (I believe they tend to cover similar content as the GDL so I think many just opt for the GDL anyway to have a formal qualification out of it).

To become a barrister you do need a qualifying law degree (QDL) however there's no preference whether this is your first undergraduate degree or if you go the GDL route as above. So going the GDL route opens both options to you
