dentistry application confusion

so I’ve applied to Leeds, Liverpool, Plymouth, and Sheffield for dentistry have been rejected by Leeds and Liverpool and I don’t have much hopeful for Plymouth or Sheffield. I don’t want to do a gap year, and I’ve got an offer for biomedical sciences at Newcastle. I’m going to try and go through clearing to get Manchester or Bristol for biomed but I’m not sure that biomed would be able to provide a good job for me in the future. Maybe I’d go into finance after graduating, but I don’t know if I’d be able to get a job. Im just confused. Is trying to get Manchester or Bristol over Newcastle a good choice as well? Or shall I just stick with Newcastle?

Sorry to hear that. What are your GCSEs and UCAT? With strong GCSEs, I'd definitely recommend taking a gap year, however if you really don't want to, there are other options available!

You seem to be assuming that university is required to have a good job in 4 years time, if the aim is now a finance job then a biomedical sciences degree seems a very odd choose.

Your teachers will have groomed you since an early age to believe that going to university is the automatic choose, it is not, unless university gives a clear and low risk path to the outcome you are aiming for.

Neither of these Unis will need to put Biomed into Clearing to fill the course.

Do you want a front-line health career dealing with people, or a researchers job sat in a lab - you choose. If you really want to do Dentistry, then a gap-year and reapplication would be a minor inconvenience - if you can't be bothered to do that, then you are clearly not that committed to Dentistry, and you need to look at alternative degrees/careers:

Hi there, best of luck for your Plymouth application! Although I'm a student from a different course (so I don't know much about this degree), feel free to let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to help 🙂

Hi, how do you know these unis wont put biomed into clearing?
Im quite set on not doing dentistry, i was sort of forced into doing it and essentially wasted 4 applications but it was too late to change after i acknowledged I didn’t want to do it
To be honest, i just want what pays best, but it wouldn’t be a front-line health career
Would i not be able to get a job in finance after graduating from biomed? Even at Newcastle
I would do summer internships and work experience throughout uni too

Hi there
My UCAT is 2090 B2
My GCSEs are 9988888887
However im quite set on not doing dentistry
It doesn’t appeal to me enough, and with dentistry i know its something you have to have a lot of passion for and be fully committed to doing
So yeah i will be looking at other options
A gap year is not one of those too, even if I wasn’t doing dentistry

Hi
The reason im going for a biomed degree is because my subjects (bio chem maths) align with the course requirements well and the actual course is something im very interested in including the content covered.
I dont know what other course I would do that would allow me to get into finance, because id have to get it through clearing which isn’t guaranteed
Do you think that even if i did summer internships and work experience for a career in finance, i would be making a mistake by trying to get a job in finance?
Im not aware of the other career options that are available to me that pay well but my skills are suited for too

Let's be reel, if you get a job with Aldi at 18, work hard and are good with management of a small team, you would likely be a Aldi Assistant Store Manager by 21 and have possible Store Manager by 25, without student loan replacement and no requirement to live in a costly City.

By age 25 can have saved for house deposit while most grads are funding it hard to afford the rent on a flat.

There are lots of other employers and trades where a hard working person of "university entry IQ" does a lot better then most graduates.

A degree gives a small possibility of a good graduate job, but it's unpredictable if you will be one of the chosen few.....

That’s a really understandable position to be in rejections make everything feel urgent and confusing.
Newcastle biomed is a solid degree in itself, and realistically the difference between Newcastle vs Manchester/Bristol for biomed matters far less than people think for future jobs. What matters more is what you do during the degree (placements, experience, skills), not just the name.
If you don’t want a gap year, sticking with Newcastle is a perfectly sensible choice. You can still reassess dentistry, healthcare, or even something like finance later once you’ve had time to breathe and plan properly.

Hi there, thank you for replying and understanding
Plymouth and Sheffield also rejected me meaning I cannot do dentistry.
But yes your point makes sense
Right now my priority is getting good grades so that if there are any courses for clearing on results day I can maximise my chance of getting accepted onto them
