University of Manchester Materials science and engineering

Hello everyone,
I am an international student planning to apply to universities in Manchester.

I have not taken IELTS yet, so I will apply with a conditional offer. I will graduate around May.
I am required to study a Foundation Year because my high school education follows a non-UK curriculum,
I am applying for Materials Science and Engineering (BSc)
I have conducted independent research in materials science under the supervision of a professor in advanced materials , involving advanced computational simulations like DFT and hands-on laboratory work . The research is original, though not yet published.

I will apply through UCAS and am currently writing my personal statement.

I would appreciate advice on:
Academic environment and student–professor interaction
Support for undergraduate research opportunities
Impact of weaker high school mathematics, given my 97% overall average and strong research background
How letters of recommendation work in UCAS/UK universities

Hello. Please apply to Manchester. It has a great social life.

Academic environment and student–professor interaction
manchester is a top uni with great academic environment.

Support for undergraduate research opportunities
There is sufficient support available through summer and general research opportunities.

Impact of weaker high school mathematics, given my 97% overall average and strong research background
It should not matter. Apply and hope for the best.

How letters of recommendation work in UCAS / UK universities
You should send follow the application requirements and instructions. I think it is 1 or 2 letters of recommendation

Good luck

You have not mentioned where you completed your high school education. Achieving an overall average of 97% is certainly outstanding; however, it is important to keep in mind that this result was obtained within a different country, culture, and education system. The UK education system differs significantly from those in many other countries.

You are planning to study at the University of Manchester, which is ranked among the top 30 universities in the world according to the highly respected QS World University Rankings. Studying in the UK—especially at a highly reputable institution such as Manchester—is academically demanding. Achieving very high marks at the University of Manchester is not easy.

Before beginning your studies, you must first meet the English language requirements, including passing the IELTS examination. After that, you may progress to the BSc degree. However, even this may not be sufficient to ensure a strong understanding of academic subjects during the Foundation Year (FY). English is a challenging language to master at an advanced academic level, and developing deep comprehension requires time and consistent effort. Weak language skills can significantly affect overall academic performance. Therefore, it is essential that you thoroughly prepare and strengthen your English proficiency before starting your Foundation Year in the UK. This is my sincere advice to you.
In general, the academic environment in the UK is supportive. You will regularly meet with your academic supervisors, and you are encouraged to ask questions whenever you do not understand something during lectures or tutorials.

Letters of recommendation are an important component of the UK academic system. They are used to assess your academic abilities, achievements, and personal character through the perspective of your referees. Such letters are also essential when applying for MSc and PhD programmes in the future. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain good relationships with your academic tutors and to perform well in your examinations if you wish to succeed in your academic and professional career.
