Have I fumbled my grad job chances? 😭

Am I overthinking it all? maybe I am but I guess what I’m looking for is a bit of advice as to where to go from here. So I’m a Maths undergraduate currently in my second year and I’m really interested in pursuing a career in the actuarial field, particularly in pensions. I’ve looked into it a lot (and still am!) and it really does seem to fit well with what I’d like in an ideal career.

Anyway I’ve started the year off pretty ****, due to procrastination and other things, meaning with semester exams approaching soon I’ve been playing catchup. This has also meant I’ve more or less missed out on the summer internship application window so I’m already behind my peers (yes, my fault I know please don’t grill me 😭)

What’s done is done though, and I’m wondering what I could do to help boost my chances come September time. I’m considering maybe taking a gap year once I’m done with my second year. I’ll be working full time (or nearly full time at least), learning stuff like excel and sql, build some projects and see if I can get into any internships.

I’ve kinda rambled on a bit here lmao but basically wanna know if I’ve ****ed myself over. If no what can I do until September 2026, if yes what are my options.

Appreciate you reading
You can't by default take a "gap year" in the middle of your course, you need to see if your uni permits that for your stated reason. Normally interruptions of study are for people who have health issues or other extenuating circumstances (bereavements, visa issues, etc), or sometimes unis permit them for students who already have a yearlong full time internships/work experience opportunity lined up.

Just look for other internships or work opportunities over the summer, especially at smaller organisations or regional offices of larger ones. There are internships outside of the global headquarters of major multinational corporations.
