gcse (aqa) english lit paper 1 advice

i'm a year 11 who studies romeo and juliet, pride and prejudice and an inspector calls as my 3 texts. i'm very confident with an inspector calls because it's a modern text, short, and a play that i resonate with.

however, pride and prejudice and romeo and juliet are texts that i don't find as easy, despite understanding the book.

i have a mock on this paper on the 5th of january, and i predict my school will use the 2025 paper - so the question on romeo and juliet will be about fate vs freewill, and the question on pride and prejudice will be about elizabeth.

i usually get a 4/5 when writing essays on these texts, and i'd really appreciate it if other year 11s/ ex year 11s gave me some advice on structuring my response, analysing structure and form and understanding the writers' intentions, because i'm predicted a 7 and would really like to attain/surpass my prediction! xx

Hey I’m in year 10 but I take advanced classes ,you just need to push your analysis a bit further. For structure, keep it simple and consistent short intro that answers the question, then about three paragraphs where you make a clear point, use a short quote, analyse the language, then zoom out to form or structure and link it to what the writer is trying to say. That’s usually what takes answers into 7 territory. For Romeo and Juliet, remember it’s a tragedy and a play, so things like the prologue, dramatic irony and the feud all help show how fate and society limit free will, even though the characters still make choices. For Pride and Prejudice, focus on Elizabeth’s development rather than just saying she’s independent Austen uses the narrative voice to show her flaws and growth, which links to ideas about self awareness and judgement. Try not to overquote, always link back to the question, and end paragraphs with a sentence about the writer’s message. You’re definitely capable of a 7+, it’s more about how you present your ideas than knowing loads more conte

Hi! I’m in year 12 and also did P and P as well as romeo and juliet and scored 60/64 on this paper and a 9 overall. I’m not naturally good at english at all i literally take bio chem psych a level and am defo a stem person so this advice is coming from someone who had to work a lot to get this grade. So first of all, whenever u write an essay show progression in the text in some way THID ID SO IMPORTANT!!! This works so so well when doing theme and character questions (although i would ALWAYS use a theme throughout my character essays). For these two texts this character progression will 100% make u get a high mark because it shows u are thinking about the text as a whole and ur essay will be well structured as it is in the same order as events occur rather than having random events that dont connect together at all but just show a theme. Also, make sure u know some good phrases to use in the opening sentence thing (forgot the name of it) and not just singular words. Another thing i did which made writing essays so much easier to get hugh marks in is learning context a quote WITH grade 9 analysis relates to and how i can show ,once again, character or theme progression. This advice is mostly for getting a 9 and making sure u do get it, i hope it helped and if u want any more just lmk !!!

Hi! I’m doing pride and prejudice and Romeo and Juliet as well at gcse and im stuck on a grade 6/7 . Especially for certain questions where it’s asking for something more specific I really struggle to answer them on the spot . I was wondering if u have any tips to jump from a grade 6 cause iv been stuck on it from year 10 . Also how did u revise for english lit , like how many quotes would u recommend learning and did u learn them theme based or character based ? Im sorry if it seems like alot but im also stuck on a 6 on english language and i was wondering if u had any tips on that ( I prefer stem subjects ) . Thanks!!

I’m not really sure what grade 6 level looks like but I was working at like a 7/8 at the start of y 10 and to move to a 9 I just started using like multiple interpretations , deeper ideas, connections to the whole text and more context. I only did characters but I did themes within characters and learned about 15 quotes per charactrg
