Change of Circumstances – Independent Student Status

I am writing to ask for advice regarding my Student Finance application for the 2025/26 academic year.I am currently receiving a tuition fee loan and the minimum maintenance loan. I did not apply for student finance based on household income. I am studying on an undergraduate course.I turned 25 a few weeks ago, after the start of the 2025/26 academic year, and I wanted to ask whether it would be possible to submit a change of circumstances to my current application so that I can be reassessed as an independent student now that I am over 25. I understand that I was not 25 at the start of the academic year, but I would appreciate clarification on whether my status can be updated partway through the year.

Hi there, students who are under the age of 25 before the first day of the academic year are classed as dependent on their natural or adoptive parent(s) and must provide their financial details for their application to be means tested. There are however situations in which they can be deemed independent:

A student can be considered independent if they supported themselves financially for at least three years (36 months) prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of the student's course. The three years can include periods when they were;

in paid employment

in receipt of state benefits such as: Income Support, JSA, incapacity benefits, invalidity pension or maternity allowance, PIP or DLA. (this is not a exhaustive list)

The three years of self-support does not need to be consecutive.

Alternatively, if a student has had no contact or limited contact (verbal or written) with their biological/adoptive parent(s) & no longer have what they would class as a supportive relationship for any amount of time, they can be assessed as an independent student on the basis of estrangement.

More information can be found here: https://www.sfengland.slc.co.uk/estrangement/

If you do not however meet either of the advised criteria, then your sponsor(s) would need to support the application for to allow the means tested review. Stephen.
