kcl EMDP interviews

hello! I just wanted to ask if there is any differences I need to be aware of when preparing for kcl EMDP interviews? I am aware the EMDP is a lot more competitive than the standard course due to less positions and I truly want to try and maximise my chances! (considering I am also a resit means I will be looked at unfavourably) \

thank you so much

hey im also going to do an emdp interview in january. i did some resarch and what they could ask you is why ypu picked the emdp course over the standard course.

Also is the emdp actually harder to get into than the standard??

ahh congrats! and thank you I haven't seen that as a potential question so that helped a lot

and I've heard it is because a. it is meant for those with more serious situations like in care and b. there are significantly less available places than the standard so I guess that's also a reason

that's just from what I've seen as I've been floating around 😭

I am currently first year on the EMDP course and I obviously can’t tell you what questions they asked but the criteria is the same as the A100 course, the interview would be the exact same it’s just that when considering your application they look at it more holistically before deciding on giving an interview.
If you get an interview they will only decide to offer a place depending on how well the interview went, it will be marked out of something like 120 and the top however many students will get offers.
That’s how it worked 24-2025 cycle it’s likely to be the same. Also they didn’t look at the personal statement unless it was a borderline decision, Good luck!

We have slightly over half of the content to cover compared to the A100 course for first year so it’s super chill. The content itself isn’t too bad it’s what you would expect from going from A level to medicine.
All our lectures together with A100 as they are covering the same content so it’s not like we are isolated from them in any way.
Also quite a few of them would have preferred doing EMDP rather than A100 just because of the reduced pressure and a much closer classroom connection with each other. It’s about 80-90 students so we basically know of everyone, it feels like sixth form which is quite good.
I’m pretty glad I am doing EMDP rather than A100 it’s a much better gradual start to uni rather than jumping in head first. After the second year you will be put back into A100 so it’s not like it’s a separate degree.

It’ll be the top 100 or so interviewees that get offers and the ones that are close to that would get waitlisted

Do you think it increases your chance of getting an offer if you apply with achieved grades that meet the requirements?

If you get an interview that will be the only thing that they use to decide whether or not to give an offer, regardless of anything else.

Thanks, I have my interview in 2 weeks. Do you have any tips to help you stand out in the interview?

The main thing would be to try to link your work experience or personal anecdotes to all the questions to show how you either have or seen the qualities needed for being a doctor thats a very important thing most people forget about

Is there any sort of stigma between A100s and A101 because I often hear this brought up specifically with KCL and how some A100s look down on A101s as if they're less capable medics because they had easier entry requirements? Obviously I'd hope that future doctors at the big age of 18+ wouldn't act like that but you never know lmao.

And is there any advice you can give regarding how to go about answering in KCL MMIs. From what I've heard from people that had interviews there some people describe it to be like an MMI but its almost panel-like in a sense where the questions are typically more generic and centred around you and your qualities and they expect answers that are more "casual" rather than the expectation of fully structured articulate answers filled with sophisticated vocabulary. KCL is my dream uni and I've spent so much time preparing by learning all sorts of content around things like Medical breakthroughs, NHS management and boards, public health, ethics and as many hot topics as possible but I'm worried about if it would be too overkill or a waste if I can't express that knowledge in the way the interviewers would like. Like is there a golden ratio for how wordy and sophisticated I should sound vs how colloquial/informal I should sound?

For the first part of the question I would say there is no stigma whatsoever between A100 and A101. All our lectures are together with them so there is no sort of disconnect, some A101 had the option between both courses and chose A101 because of the slightly different structure in the first stage. Also we aren’t in secondary school there isn’t anything petty like that, people are too absorbed in their own life’s to care about what other people are doing.

When it comes to the MMI stations I would say they don’t expect “casual” answers per se I don’t know who told you that. At the end of the day you are being interviewed for a space at medical school they expect competency. If you overdo it with casual language they would think you aren’t as serious as other candidates. Obviously don’t overdo it, but avoid talking to them as you would to a friend, they are examining you not having an everyday conversation. You want to be able to show them you are able to be capable and articulate, there is no ratio just try to be comfortable but keep professional without obviously overdoing it.
