What happens at Swansea Paramedic Science selection day?

I've been invited to a selection day for Paramedic Science BSc at Swansea University. Can anyone who has done it recently share what to expect, what questions they ask, or tips for preparing? 😊

Hey @l7205

I’m a paramedic student at BCU so i don’t exactly know what the Swansea selection day includes but i assume it will include an interview component.
Here’s a post i did on paramedic science interview tips, hopefully this helps .

———————————————————————
I had no idea where to start when preparing for myparamedic science interview, so here’s some tips Iwish I had! These will also be applicable to many other allied health professions courses.

•🚨NHS Values + 6Cs - Research these and tryand link these values to personal experiences.

•🚑HCPC code of conduct - The HCPC is theregulatory body for paramedics and other alliedhealth professions. It’s good to understand what is expected of you.

•🚨Understand the career - This may sound like an obvious one to some but as a paramedic you won't always be responding to life-threatening-calls. You can attend a wide range of patients in aday. Make sure you properly research the career prior to your interview.

•🚑Have an understanding of some latest topics of discussion in the field, upcoming research, challenges faced, etc.

•🚨Dress smartly - whether your interview is in person or online, it’s good to show the interviewer that you have made an effort.

•🚑Show your passion and know why you want tobe a paramedic!

•🚨Reflect - Not everyone will have previoushealthcare experience (and that’s okay!) Makesure to reflect on the experiences you have andhow they will help you as a paramedic.

•🚑Be realistic about challenges - university canbe a stressful time and you may be exposed todifficult experiences on placement. How will youcope with these and know when to seek help.

•🚨Ask something at the end of the interview.
Finally, it’s okay to be nervous! Interviewers areexpecting it. Get more advice for your interview:https://bit.ly/3ZYrueL

Any advice submitting the video? Not given any guidance other than dress smart and needs to be 5 mins. Did you record as one or stop and start and then snip together, also did you have cue cards or a script to read from

Hello, I had this same issue. I e-mailed admissions and they responded too late so I ended up recording in one take, but they said you can edit it however you would like. I would recommend making some flashcards on some points you would like to bring up, learn the points and then make a script. Practise the script a few times and then try without it. They would prefer you didn't refer to any notes during the video but I'm sure putting some sticky notes on your screen wouldn't hurt. Also just to check, I was told 3 minutes not 5, are you sure that's the time limit? x

Thank you so much for the response. Yes 5 mins they have advised on the email (I’ve applied for occupational therapy, but its same process as the paramedic courses) also advised the selection day will be 17/2, if I get through this stage. I have emailed the admissions team but guessing they will be busy and may not get back to me. But this is great thanks again

No worries, good luck. I would recommend finding statistics on the course for example the percentage of students in work or futher education, the percentage that had positive experiences. I'd also recommend mentioning specific parts of modules and what you like about it. Basically, you want to stand out and show you've done your research. I'd also recommend researching the lecturers and finding out research they have done or experience they have and mention them by name.

Thanks again I appreciate the advice. They have given me 2 questions one about the role and then a video on climate change and a question with reference to how this fits in with the role. So researching as much as I can at the moment. Good luck on the 17th

Wouldn’t worry at this stage. Mine was submitted early December and I’ve still not heard anything! Slightly nervous too though as a mature student, it’s the only uni I’m able to attend! And want to attend really. Fingers crossed we hear soon as the selection says are mid Feb! Good luck 🙂
