HEMS and Wildnerness Medicine?

Hi Everyone!
Im in Y13 and going to do medicine at uni next year. I am very interested in emergency med, especially pre-hospital med.
I was just wondering what path I would need to go down to achieve getting into the HEMS field in the future? I know it. is long term but it is something to look forward to
Should I consider intercalation? I understand that getting into the field is very competitive and was wondering what stuff I should do at med school to increase chances?

Obviously still open to other specialities but was just curious
Thanks!

Hi,

Congratulations on applying to medicine. It's great that you have an idea of what you're already interested in specialty wise, although I would still stay keep your mind open to other specialties also.

I would advise you to take part in as many extracurriculars to build your portfolio. This could be emergency medicine society, anaesthetics/critical care society. Get involved in being on committee for societies and also teaching. Many societies will offer opportunities to teach younger medical students. Also look into attending national conferences, where discussions about your interested specialty will be happening. Conferences also give you the opportunity to network with professionals in the specific field. All of these should help you to develop the skills, like leadership and teamwork. Also take part in regular reflective practice as this is an essential skill as a doctor.

I hope this help!
