Friends (Undergraduate) 2026

Hey!!

I'm an American that applied to the University of Glasgow for my undergraduate studies in economics. I'm lowk worried about making friends cause I won't know ANYONE when I go there. I got an unconditional offer and I'm just waiting to see about potential scholarships and stuff. I'm mostly certain about attending the University of Glasgow. The one thing that's kinda holding me back is the social life because no one from my area is going to the UK for uni so that's stressing me out.

Sorry I'm typing this while stressed, so it's not well written. :colonhash:

hello, intl student as well who’s strongly considering glasgow (if edinburgh doesn’t pan out)!! there’ll likely be a ton of group chats and stuff making the rounds from like feb/march onwards (maybe check the uni subreddit for those), because that’s what i saw last year at least, so dw about not getting to know people beforehand. even if you don’t join gcs, it’ll be very easy to meet new people once you acc get there, because everyone’s mostly in the same boat, especially international students (and there’s quite a lot of them)!! it’s only really some glaswegian students who are likely to know others from beforehand since they make up like half of the student population.

Hey! That's a totally normal and common worry! I'm originally from the US and moved here in 1st year knowing no body, but Glasgow Uni is the perfect place to do that as our Fresher's Week is pretty robust. So there is 2 Student's Unions who organize day and nighttime events thought that week which gives you a taster that the abundance of events that happen throughout term time. These events are a great way to meet people they range from paining bob ross paintings to dodgeball, pub quizzes, to club nights- find more info here: https://www.uofg-freshers-week.com/ Staying in Student Accomidation is also such a great way to meet new people- you've got built in friends from day 1- your flatmates who you could attend fresher's events together if you don't feel like going there alone. The majority of our student accommodation are multi-building complexes ranging from 10-30 minutes walks form the uni and they are almost like little villages within themselves so it really facilitates lots of mingling since you'll be quite centralized with each other and have access to common rooms. Sports clubs also run taster sessions during Fresher's week and one of my good friends to this day is someone i met on the mini bus ride over to the soccer field. It's a really welcoming environment where everyone's in the same boat and looking to meet people. Have a look at our clubs and societies too as that's a great way to meet people with common interests: https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/clubs-socs/find/ And here's links to our student unions' websites: https://www.qmunion.org.uk/ https://www.guu.co.uk/

Feel free to reach out with more questions!
