gcse classics 8 and 15 marker advice

i'm trying to learn the ocr classical civillisations gcse by myself, but I'm struggling with how to structure and write the essay questions, I'm not even sure what they are meant to really look like 😓😓

Especially with 15 markers for myth and religion, I don't really understand how you are expected to blend roman and greek together -- are you expected to compare them or describe them both as one unit?

If anyone has advice on structures, timing, or example answers, I'd really appreciate it !!! (I'm taking myth and religion and the homeric world)

hi im sorry this reply is so late hope u see it!!
basically, the structure I use for 15 markers is really similar to an english lit essay, I do a short (literally 1 sentence) intro, then I do three paragraphs, or two big ones (which i could split into 4 small ones) depending on the question, then a small conclusion. for the blending greek and roman, i havent seen a question where you have to combine both as they cover different things, the question is normally to contrast the greek and roman - so for a simple structure i would do one paragraph on greek and one paragraph on roman. there was one question in 2024 that asked for greek and roman, however I would stick to separating these and maybe making a comment about their similarities in a seperate paragraph. if you find this structure confusing i used to do my 15 markers based on three points which were each a paragraph, and then do half the paragraph on greek/agreeing and half the paragraph on roman/disagreeing. I normally get 13-15/15 on my essays and they all go up to the end of the given space in the booklet. timings - its 90 marks 90 minutes, so typically I would do 10 minutes per each 8 marker and 20 minutes MAX for the 15 marker (5 minutes planning and 15 minutes writing roughly). if this is really unclear let me know!!

hi im also doing classics gcse, thats so impressive that you're doing on your own, well done. I usually begin with a short 1-2 sentence intro, for example for the question: "Theseus' founding of Athens was more impressive that Aeneas' founding of Rome" how far do you agree with this statement, I wrote the intro: I mostly disagree with the statement because while both foundation stories are impressive, you can argue that Rome wouldn't exist without Aeneas but Athens would exist with or without Theseus. As you can see, this is short, while showing you stance on the question. Then I would include one paragraph talking about Aeneas, and then one talking about Theseus, and then potentially another comparing the two closely, and then a conclusion of roughly 3 sentences summarising your argument and with a cyclical ending. I hope this helps, and sorry for the late reply. Good luck xx

hii I also do GCSE Classics! My 15 markers are the exact same almost but what I would say for the 8 Markers is to follow this structure as it makes it easy to understand and remember in exam conditions:

1 very short opening sentence (if its necessary)

Make a point that answers the question

Explain it clearly in no more than 2 sentences

Do this 5 times. (2 marks per point and one safety point in case one of your others isn't as strong)

A VERY short conclusion if you have time ( like 1 sentence that finally answers the question)

Think of 8 markers as a small 15 marker in a sense, this is the structure my Classics teacher has taught us and I usually get level 4 (7-8 ) mark answers. I really hope I could help!! good luck!
