A level choices

I’m currently in year 11, stuck on picking my a level options. Currently I am between:
1) bio psych maths OR bio geo maths
2) chem econ maths OR chem geo maths
I’ve heard that the bio mark scheme is very specific but I’ve also heard of how hard chemistry is. I am only set on picking one science a- level at the moment, so either bio or chem. Also, I have heard that the psych content is a lottt which I am wondering will it clash badly with biology? Thank you so much, any help is deeply appreciated !

Can you do Bio, Psych, maths and Geo, then drop one in second year?

I cann but I feel like there’s no point of me doing 4 a levels especially because in my opinion psych and geo are both filler subjects.

Since it seems like maths is the only one you're set on, why not do bio chem maths? I wouldn't worry about the workload or whatever you've been told about them, and they give you the most options if you aren't set on a uni course yet. Is there any other reason why you only want to do one science?

Do u think bio psych maths is a good combo or chem econ maths. Our school does AQA biology and OCR A chemistry.

To be honest, I feel like if I do bio chem maths people are automatically going to think I want to go into medicine. Also I feel like it would be a waste not to do the ucat and if I don’t get a good ucat then I can’t go to a good russel group university. I know I shouldn’t care about other people’s opinions but I can’t help it!

Bio psych and maths is a better combo but too sciency unless you are on that pathway. If not, i would follow the route i proposed

I would like to do biological science or biomedical technology at imperial x

Psych was the easiest one I did, bio was hardest. AQA psych doesn’t clash a whole lot, from what I can remember only stuff about neurotransmitters but bio goes a lot more in depth and it was helpful in psych

Id check the courses on the unis websites to see if they specify any particular subjects before making any decisions. If they specify any particular subjects then you are best off doing them.

hi! year 12 student here, I take bio, chem and psych. firstly, I think you should choose what you enjoy the most, because if you enjoy it you will be more inclined to do work therefore you will do better. I wouldn't worry about the bio mark scheme to be honest, part of the course is learning which terminology to use and how to answer the question. chemistry is hard, but tbh its my favourite subject at the moment, if you are good at GCSE and u enjoy it now u will be fine. I know lots of people say it will be hard (I heard that a lot when I told people I was choosing it) but it is SO subjective. also if you are even thinking of doing maths it must mean you are good at it, so you will have no problem with chemistry a level maths. for psych, all I would say is that it is defo not a filler subject (for some people maybe, but if u are looking at biomed then it could be valued), also there is a lot of content. BUT you did say u were worried about taking 3 sciences. for me psych is quite different to my other 2, don't get me wrong there is a lot of overlap but it is more of an applied science (if u don't like essays then I probs wouldn't consider). ALSO psych defo doesn't clash badly with bio, in fact it actually meshes VERY well. there is a whole topic on biopsych in psych which is mostly bio content. if u are interested in psych I would say take it, if u are just using it as a 'filler' then its probs not worth it. if u are doing an EPQ I would think of a good area you want to research. make it linked to the course you want to do as well (remember if its too much u can always drop). (sorry this is getting quite long) I would have a look at the entry requirements for the course you are interested in. many biomed / biotech courses will definitely require 2 main sciences (bio, chemistry, maths, physics) most DO say you HAVE to have bio and chem, so bare that in mind especially if you have your sights set on imperial or another russle group uni.

hopefully this helps, sorry it is such a long para. but good luck with your choices!!!

Hi. Firstly, here is a tally of how many times you mentioned each subject:

×4 maths
×2 geography
×2 biology
×2 chemistry
×1 economics
×1 psychology

To me, this suggests that you should definitely take maths. From there, I think it suggests that your other two option should be one of geography, biology, and chemistry.

Whilst I can't tell you which one of these to take, or even tell you about them myself (I'm a humanities student), I do feel like the amount of possible subject combinations that a subject appears in is telling - and you should listen to it.

I hope this helps! 😊
