does Oxford uni hold GCSEs to a high regard when considering applications?

Hey guys, i want to apply to Oxford uni for chemistry in the future however i feel like my GCSEs are quite low compared to other applicants who apply to the programme so could that affect the application? For reference i got an 8 in maths and a 7 in chemistry

Don't worry about GCSEs. As long as you have a decent number of 9s, 8s and 7s, you can still apply. And do so anyway it'll help you.

Varies depending on course. I think they are formally scored as part of shortlisting but as above if you are mostly getting 7/8/9 grades I suspect it's fine. Note GCSEs are usually assessed more in the whole than in terms of specific subjects (usually the exceptions being English language and maths where some unis may look for a specific grade in that particular subject). So they will likely be scoring your overall GCSE grade profile e.g. number and proportion of A or A* equivalent grades. Whether a given grade was in art or physics for example is not usually a factor.

Hi, just joining this thread with a question:
I've recently recieved my GCSE PE practical grades back and I've done terribly (not an overexaggeration, they're really not good at all). I've done the maths and with my mock grades which were last year's papers and using last year's grade boundaries, I can only scrape a 7. If I were to achieve this or a 6 alongside the 9s and 8s I achieved as someone who wants to go into law or politics, would this hinder me in terms of applying to universities such as Oxford or Cambridge due to its highly competitive nature? I know I may be being a bit overdramatic but I really am quite stressed in terms of if I'll even be considered over somebody else with all 8s and 9s.
I'd really appreciate any help/advice you may have to offer.

I doubt a single bad grade in a vacuum will by itself prevent you getting an offer, they look at your overall grade profile and look at your GCSEs in context.

You are trying to look at a very holistic and nuanced process through a very black and white viewpoint, which just isn't how uni admissions works.

I have personal experience with this, got one 6 in Drama alongside all 8s and 9s in other subjects at GCSE. I applied for English at uni and it was never an issue, ended up getting an Oxbridge offer but one GCSE grade is realistically speaking never going to swing that, especially as it sounds like you have very strong grades regardless! A Level grades and supercurriculars are far more important, and like others have said, Oxbridge consider applications holistically so really don't worry. Just do the best you can, and goodluck in all future applications!
