Do cleaners ever just walk into your room? Is this normal at other unis?

Not sure if this is just my accommodation or if this happens everywhere but it’s been bugging me a bit. A few times now cleaners or maintenance have knocked and then just come in, sometimes early in the morning, sometimes when I’m asleep or not really ready for anyone to be there. Half the time I didn’t even know anyone was meant to be coming.

I know they’re just doing their jobs and it’s not personal, but it still feels pretty awkward when you’re caught off guard, especially after a late night or when you’re just trying to chill in your room. There also doesn’t seem to be any proper heads up about cleaning days, maintenance, so you’re kind of always guessing.

Just wanted to see if this is normal or if other unis handle it better. What uni are you at and do you get warned in advance or is it the same there too?

It definitely happened to me at uni unfortunately. The times were usually between 9 and 5 which wasn't too bad. We were told most of the time when we had maintenance or cleaning done.

I lived in university accommodation during my first year and in private accommodation for the remaining years. In both places, we were usually given advance notice before cleaners or maintenance visited, though there were a few occasions where they turned up without warning. Thankfully, in those moments I happened to be prepared for someone to come in.

It does sound really frustrating if this keeps happening though. Have you tried emailing your accommodation team about it? Or maybe putting a note on your door asking them to knock and wait before entering?

How did they let you know when cleaners are coming it’s a issue that the uni don’t seem to care about or maybe students are just worried to speak up about

We got an email which said what day the cleaners would come (roughly every four weeks where I went).

In university accommodation, we were told at the start of the year that the cleaner would come on Mondays. I cannot remember the exact time, but I think it was between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. That day and time stayed consistent unless the cleaner was unable to attend, in which case we were given as much notice as possible by email.

In private accommodation, we did not have a weekly cleaner, but there were periodic cleaning checks instead (we had to clean it ourselves). We were given a month's notice for these, and again, we were informed as early as possible if anything changed.

I remember that when I was having issues with my flatmates not keeping the communal kitchen clean, they increased the frequency of the cleaning checks and things did improve, albeit rather slowly. I know it can be difficult, but if something isn't right and your concern is valid, it's okay to speak up.

The maintenance checks weren't set at specific times and days, but we did get plenty of notice 90% of the time.

Hi @moe9090πŸ‘‹

Hope you are well. That is different to us! Here at Essex, the cleaners tend to take out the bins in the kitchen everyday in the morning and on fridays they clean the whole kitchen. Bedroom wise, they will clean during the holidays and that is usually if you are gone but you can request them to come over. I am not sure about your university but that is quite awkward actually!

Happens at mine too, once I was in bed not alone if you know what I mean, a quick bit of improvisation avoided total embarrassment
