Does anyone else have cleaners just walk into their room??

Not sure if this is just my accommodation or if this happens everywhere but it’s been bugging me a bit. A few times now cleaners or maintenance have knocked and then just come in, sometimes early in the morning, sometimes when I’m asleep or not really ready for anyone to be there. Half the time I didn’t even know anyone was meant to be coming.

I know they’re just doing their jobs and it’s not personal, but it still feels pretty awkward when you’re caught off guard, especially after a late night or when you’re just trying to chill in your room. There also doesn’t seem to be any proper heads up about cleaning days, maintenance, so you’re kind of always guessing.

Just wanted to see if this is normal or if other unis handle it better. What uni are you at and do you get warned in advance or is it the same there too?

Hi there,

If you are in uni accomodation they can often be on a schedule and let themselves into communal spaces to clean. If they are walking into your room itself that is much less common in my experience, i have never seen one come into a private room without prior warning.

Either way to ensure you know they are coming you should be able to contact the accomodation and ask if they are meant to do that or for a schedule so you will know when they will be there,

Hope this helps

Hey @moe9090! This is a good question and as someone in university accommodation, I completely understand the frustration! So I will try to answer you as clearly as possible and I hope it helps.

IS THIS NORMAL?
I would say yes, to an extent but the way it is handled varies a lot.

Most unis:

Have scheduled cleaning (often weekly or fortnightly)

Carry out maintenance checks during working hours

Allow staff to enter rooms after knocking if there’s no response

However, other accommodations (like mine actually) usually:

Email in advance about cleaning days

Put notices up in kitchens or corridors

Only enter rooms if absolutely necessary

Ask for communication regarding what time is best to enter rooms

If you are not getting no warning at all, that is more on the disorganised side which is not unheard of but not ideal.

ABOUT THEM KNOCKING AND JUST COMING IN
Usually the policy is:

Knock

Wait a short time

Enter if there is no answer

But there is still an expectation for respected privacy, avoid early mornings where possible and limit unnecessary entry.

You are allowed to complain or just raise it to your accommodation if you feel like this is being violated.

SMALL THINGS TO DO THAT MIGHT HELP:

1.

Ask for the cleaning schedule

2.

Raise it formally if it keeps happening

3.

Use the latch/lock if available

So to summarise 😂 yes this does happen a lot and it can be uncomfortable. However, if you believe it is too excessive then definitely it is worth raising a formal complaint. I really hope this helped 🙂
