would i get extra consideration at uni?

hi, i’m looking to apply for dentistry (2027) i live on an estate which is quite deprived in comparison to other areas in my town. therefore, i assumed id be reliable for some sort of extra consideration (sister was given contextual offers) however, my postcode is in a disadvantaged estate, but, people have started going to to university on my road as they were previously given lower offers, but now, contextual offers are no longer being given. however, my friend lives in a large detached house near my estate and attends private school without scholarship, yet her postcode would make her eligible for contextual offers and she doesn’t come from a disadvantaged area.. upon checking IMD, my postcode has been grouped in a “neighbourhood” which a higher income postcode, making the IMD increase, instead of being in a neighbourhood with the rest of the estate (which have IMD 1/2). when applying, would i be able to put a note about this? as this is not right.

Each University uses slightly different criteria for Contextual Offers, and often different postcode 'data', so you need to check carefully on each separate Uni website to see if you qualify before you apply. Be aware that often you need to fulfil multiple criteria to be eligible. Examples :
Contextual offers | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
Access Sheffield policies (Contextual admissions) | Study at Sheffield | The University of Sheffield

If you wanted to write something, try making it into a selling point rather than complaining about an unfair system. Eg in your personal statement your could talk about how you grew up on a deprived estate where you saw the barriers people encountered to accessing good dental care, and how you are passionate about breaking down those barriers etc and maybe mention some related reading you have done.

ngl barely any unis look at personal statement for dentistry so this wouldn’t do much…but if they get an interview then it’s worth mentioning, but then again it wouldn’t lower any grade entry requirements

hi, i’ve looked at sheffield, leeds, lpool and mcr. the only that have extra consideration (not contextual) was mcr. as said as i changed the postcode do the other 3 unis, if said i would be elegible although other things eg care and asylum seeker weren’t put down. thank you for your response !!

thank you for your response ! this is something that i’ve been thinking about mentioning as this was one of the reasons why i want to pursue dentistry after my neighbour mentioned this exact thing to me!

hi thanks for your response! i thought that some do look at your PS as thy mention the things you put there in your interview, no? also i’m not really bothered about the lowering grade entry, just want extra consideration into my application eg for the UCAT, slightly missing my offer etc.. but i have applied to MAP so i hope that i can get it

yess I would very much recommend you look into university programmes that would help lower your entry requirements/ give guaranteed interview I think this would be the best way to get some help at least. look at other universities like Plymouth kings ect
