MSc Speech and Lang Therapy Interviews

Hi, I have a couple of MSc interviews coming up over the next month and I could use some guidance on how to prepare- especially from people that have done them, but also with interviews (general). The unis I've got confirmed interviews for already are MMU and YSJ and both have group interview elements and at least one has a 1:1 interview element too. How can I best prepare? I'm trying to write out answers I like for questions and make sure I know as much as I think I do lol but I'm finding it a bit overwhelming...? Especially when I don't even really know what a group interview will entail- I've not done one since I was sixteen...

Look at the 'skills' section here - Speech and language therapist job profile | Prospects.ac.uk - and think about what examples you could use to show that you have the right skills or attributes.

Hi @zazzy.r

Congratulations on getting an interview for MSc SLT. This is some SLT interview advice given by a previous Student Ambassador of ours, which I hope you will find helpful:

Firstly, practice talking out loud to yourself or someone else. I found the pressure of talking out loud and forming answers on the spot quite difficult, so saying some practice answers out loud is definitely worth trying!

Make sure you know how to answer the simplest question of why you want to do the subject? Why have you chosen SLT? Why are you passionate about this course and the profession? This will give a strong foundation to your interview and always showing a passion for the subject and commitment to the profession is something an interviewer will be looking for.

Research what the NHS says about the SLT profession and how it helps people. This is a brilliant way to help build the answers to your interview questions.

Furthermore, research what the Man Met says about the degree course on the course webpage: MSc Speech and Language Therapy. What modules does it include? Get knowledgeable about these.

Remind yourself of why you deserve to be on the course. An interview is all about telling the interviewer why they want you, specifically you on their course so don’t hold back! Before the interview write out what skills you think an Speech and Language Therapist should have, why they should have this skill and what experience you have that shows you also have this skill. Post-it notes around your computer and desk so you can read them regularly are helpful so when you’re asked about it in the interview your answer will likely be fluent and detailed.

Finally, keep calm. The interview is an opportunity to show how awesome you are and why we want you at Man Met. Relax, talk slowly and don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat a question.

I hope this advice helps and good luck with your interview.

Mel
