LLE second degree funding if course has already started

I read that the LLE will take over current student financing in Jan 2027, if I start my course in September 2026 in dentistry, I won’t be eligible for a tuition fee loan as it’s my second degree so will have to self-fund. Would I then be able to apply for LLE from January 2027? I don’t really want to have to defer for a year but being able to borrow my tuition fees will make a huge difference to the financial stress of going back to uni!

Hi there, at present there is currently no guidance available if a student who applies for a secondary degree, would be eligible for support under the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement. We will be expecting this information to be come available in due course, but at present the current information available can be found here:

Thanks, Stephen

Hi, thanks for the reply. It does say if be eligible for funding of a second degree, to the amount that remains in my learner fund after my first one has been accounted for. It says that after that has been used my remaining years could also be covered because dentistry is on the exemptions course list. However my question is more about if I have already started the course when the funding becomes available in January if I can apply for it then because I would have already started the course? It says those courses would be covered by current SFE but under current SFE rules I’m not eligible to get a second degree tuition fee loan.

Hi there, if you have already started the course, then you will not be able to apply for the Lifelong learning as the guidance states that this is only available to students starting a new course on or after 1st January 2027. Stephen.
