Does your dissertation cap the mark you can get in your undergrad?

My sister told me that the mark you get in your dissertation is the cap you can get on your final degree grade. So like if you get a 69 on your dissertation, even if the rest of your grades add to a 73, the most you can get is a 69. I've been looking and am yet to find anything that confirms this? Is this a myth or facts, bc if so I think I may need to lock in more.

Nope, I've never seen that in any UK university. I would suggest she's talking rubbish.

Not something I've ever heard of. If it were true it would be something made clear in your course handbook.

Note that failing the dissertation module will result in your grade being capped -- but that's because you won't have enough credits to get an honours degree, but may well have enough to be awarded an ordinary degree (i.e. a degree without honours).

Hi!

No, it doesn’t work like that, you can still get above 69 overall if your dissertation grade is 69. But the dissertation grade definitely influences the overall grade since it’s usually a large percentage of the grade.

I've never heard of this for any course regulation I'm aware of, in terms of an overall cap. However, I believe if you're right on a grade boundary your dissertation result can influence the exam board to decide in one direction or another for your final classification.

Obviously also in terms of how averages work and the usually higher proportion of credits your dissertation works out to be, that can "cap" how high your average for the year is - that's true for any module though.

Also as noted above, failing the dissertation will normally mean you graduate with an ordinary degree rather than an honours degree (and hence, you won't have a classification at all).
