Where do you meet friends to drink with/go to the club with?

It's my second year of uni and I still haven't met like minded people I would really like to socialise more.

Hey @mkastudy ! This is honestly so valid. You are really not alone in this and it is honestly more common in second year than people admit. I would say, I actually solidified my friendships in second year. So Uni social life is not a straight line where everyone magically finds their people in first year then cruises along.

FIRSTLY:
Not having found like-minded people yet can happen because:

first-year friendships were situational (same flat, same timetable)

people drift into different routines in second year

you’ve grown or changed since starting uni

None of that reflects your value or social ability!

PRACTICAL WAYS TO MEET PEOPLE IN SECOND YEAR (that worked for me):

1.

Societies but niche ones:

Big societies can SOMETIMES feel cliquey. Smaller, interest-based ones are better.

Examples:

book clubs

film, art, writing, photography

volunteering societies

cultural or identity-based groups

academic societies for your course

These attract people who want conversation, not just partying.

1.

Saying yes to one thing a week:

Not everything. Just one.

a society event

a study group

a coffee after a seminar

a volunteering session

Consistency matters more than enthusiasm.

1.

Build friendships through routine, not effort:

Friendships form when you see the same people repeatedly.

Good places:

same library spot

same gym class

same society weekly meeting

same café at the same time

You don’t need to be charismatic. you need to be present.

1.

Use low-stakes conversation starters

You don't need deep or clever openers, most people are just relieved someone spoke first! I know I was! 😂

I would definitely say even when it feels like everyone else has it figured out, you are not alone in this. So I really hope these tips help and let me know if you have any more questions 🙂

Hi there,

I hope you are doing well! One of the best ways I found to make friends at University was through joining societies. This can be found through your student union website, and also at the societies fair. Often, they will have organised socials which you will be able to attend.

Hope this helps!

Hiya (:

As others have mentioned, joining societies is fab for getting to know some people you otherwise wouldn't meet, also usually gives you some fun activities to attend😊 - outwith societies, you could try sitting with others on their own in lectures, just having a wee chat, maybe organising a time to study together could help? - depends on where your uni is but within the city centre, you may also have some other events you could go to!

hope this helps a bit, best of luck!!
