urine testing in GP

New HCA with no prior experience, anyone know any links to websites on how I know whether a patients urine should be sent of after dip stick testing. I've looked at NICE but for things lie a pt who was 41, who's dipstick was negative for all, the nurse said to send it off due to her age and symptoms which was just burning on passing urine. How would I know that?

Ask your line manager! They need to know if you need support even if they are busy.

Didn't you ask the nurse?

There is not going to be a website you can look at that tells you every possible decision-making or investigative option for every single patient. It doesn't really work that way. How you approach a 41 year old can vary based on their symptoms, their history, their presenting complaint, are they pregnant, male/female, etc etc etc.

You need to be asking the person who is working with you what to do for guidance on this sort of thing. This is where their experience and education comes in.

Anyway, don't worry, you won't be the first person to have tipped away a urine sample you were supposed to send to the lab, I did it more than few times as a HCA as well.
